You could like rap again! Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek reunite to release first Reflection Eternal album in almost a decade, tour America

Already in the midst of a tour that my friend Matt describes as “ballin’ severe,” Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek are set to release Revolutions Per Minute, the first Reflection Eternal album since 2000’s Train Of Thought (an album that made my list for TMT’s Favorite Albums 2000-2009). To commemorate the reunion, they have created a classic MySpace page (ask your parents) where one can stream the new singles and watch behind-the-scenes and in-front-of-the-scenes music videos.

On the single “In This World,” Hi-Tek samples the now-infamous lyric from Jay-Z’s “Moment of Clarity”: “If skills sold/ Truth be told/ I’d probably be/ Lyrically, Talib Kweli.” Jay-Z, who knew that lyrics in fact do not sell, proceeded to release two awful LPs and a movie soundtrack, while Kweli continued to hover just below the threshold of mainstream popularity. While “Strangers” features some good old-fashioned Kweli quick-flow (what the fuck is he saying at 1:08?!), “Midnight Hour” is completely absent of Kweli’s trademark tricky-ass rhymes. Still, I have to admit I’m sold on Hit-Tek’s faux-60s-soul-pop production. And while complicated, multi-syllabic rhymes may have become Kweli’s trademark, his real strength lies in his ability to deliver lyrics of any complexity with a consistent god-damn-ness.

So check out Revolutions Per Minute on May 18, and be sure to catch Reflection Eternal’s tour ballin’ severe. If you don’t trust a stranger named Matt, then why do you even trust me? And If you don’t get that joke, reread the first paragraph.

Broken Social Scene announce full North American tour, but what about my vagina?

I have been so penis/vagina-centric that it honestly never occurred to me that Broken Social Scene could be a great pleasure on its own. I always assumed it was a poor substitute for the ‘real’ thing.

That’s ignorance and arrogance all rolled into one.

I’m so over that now. In fact, Broken Social Scene are my new frontier. I’m gradually educating myself and preparing to explore all that BSS have to offer. But this isn’t to say there won’t be any questions. For one, how exactly will I fit Broken Social Scene into my vagina? Perhaps this means there’s lube testing to be done — understanding which lubes work best with what, and which ones are dildo destroyers, etc. It can get confusing, that’s for sure.

Anyway, this girl has a lot of homework to do. Maybe some field work is in order.

Set the mustache count back to zero, Carlos D leaves Interpol

Bad/good news for mustache lovers/haters: Interpol’s mustachioed, holster-wearing bassist Carlos D (or Dengler, if you’re being formal) has left the group to pursue other interests. What other interests? Well, that’s not totally clear, but Mr. D has dipped his toes in the pools of DJing, film-making, classical music blogging, and hanging out with awesome-looking greyhounds. One can imagine he will be pursuing one of these aforementioned interests, but who knows — maybe he also has a secret passion for rock climbing or knitting or something.

Here’s the official announcement from Interpol:

After the completion of the album, Carlos informed the rest of us that he would be leaving the band. He has decided to follow another path, and to pursue new goals. This separation is amicable, and we whole-heartedly wish him great happiness and success. We will remain, as always, deeply respectful fans of this blazingly talented individual.

The D-less Interpol have a new single, “Lights,” off their forthcoming new record, available through their website.

Google is mad about getting sued by a small record company, sues small record company

Last year, a small blues-based independent label, Blue Destiny Records, filed suit against Google, Microsoft, and Rapidshare on grounds that Rapidshare, in linking to copyrighted material, was violating copyright law, while search engines Google and Microsoft’s Bing were promoting Rapidshare’s system. Which sounds kind of illogical and money-grubbing, so unsurprisingly, in March of this year Blue Destiny voluntarily withdrew its lawsuit. Google no longer had anything to worry about, right?

Wrong. Google has recently decided to go all playground bully on the smaller record label, asking Blue Destiny to waive its right to pursue litigation on the issue in the future. When the label refused, Google decided to sue them right back, which isn’t petulant or childish at all. The apparent benefit of Google flexing its muscles over a much smaller company is that, in the likely case that the courts rule in favor of Google, it will set a precedent for larger cases that explore whether search engines help to promote copyright infringement.

So, I guess, kudos to Google for throwing its weight around and trying to crush an independent record label to get around potentially damaging litigation.
