Guys, this is God. Your lord. Hello there! I just wanted to float down from heaven on this awesome white cloud here to bestow upon all you adorable little mortals the exciting news that the rock band Yuck, which you all loved so much back in 2011, is coming back a second time (sounds kinda like a certain son of mine! LOL!) with their second album on September 30 in the UK and October 1 in the US (via Fat Possum/Pharmacy). I totally decree that it shall be called Glow and Behold and, because I say so, will be available on both CD and white vinyl. I like the color white a quite lot; what can I tell you?

Anyway, here’s a few things that you should know. My man Chris Coady produced it, and guitarist Max Bloom is now in charge of the whole outfit (former frontman Daniel Blumberg was getting just a little too curious about the difference between good and evil, so I kinda had to banish him to experimental solo project status). So yes, as you could maybe tell from the first single they released earlier this year, the band does sound a little bit different than before. But be not afraid! It’s still rock ‘n’ roll, and you folks are gonna enjoy the heckaroony out of it (Monday through Saturday only, of course!). Heck, I’ll tell you what; because I’m pretty much THE MAN (they pretty much just call me “I Am Who I Am” upstairs; isn’t that, like, Tarantino-rad?), I’ll bestow another single from the album on you. This one’s called “Middle Sea.” Do you get it? Oh, and don’t worry; I’ll also make it so that you can preorder the whole album over at the Fat Possum website… right… about… now.

Interpretations’ new music and creative improv monthly concert series starts next month

It’s pretty staggering to think of a concert series lasting a quarter-century, especially considering the vicissitudes of new and experimental music programming, but this fall marks the 25th concert season of Interpretations, a new music and creative improvisation series curated in part by vocalist Thomas Buckner and the Mutable Music imprint. Buckner’s connection to avant-garde composition and free music goes back at least to the early 1970s, when he ran the 1750 Arch concert series in Berkeley, as well as the 1750 Arch Records imprint (with releases by Gerald Oshita, Roscoe Mitchell, David Rosenboom, Infinite Sound, and many others). Buckner returned to his native New York in 1983, and began the Mutable label in 2000. Interpretations is an appropriate moniker, considering the fact that improvisation and new music composition sometimes appear like different branches of the same tree.

Buckner’s connection to the Chicago axis of free music is made clear from the series’ first concert of 2013, featuring solo and ensemble music from pianist and Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) founder Muhal Richard Abrams (pictured). Improvising composers such as reedman Yusef Lateef and percussionist Adam Rudolf will have their works performed by the Momenta String Quartet (Emilie-Ann Gendron, violin; Adda Kridler, violin; Stephanie Griffin, viola; Michael Haas, cello), and works by Walter Marchetti, Annea Lockwood, Gene Coleman, JG Thirwell, Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Braxton, and Joan LaBarbera will be performed in a variety of instrumental and vocal settings. Look out for bassist James Ilgenfritz’ solo and chamber interpretations of new and historical compositions from the books of AACM-ers and industrial musicians alike, an evening which also features the music of Oliveros and Marchetti. Excepting January, the concerts will be monthly, starting on September 26, 2013 with Abrams and closing on April 24, 2014 with music from electronics artist Tom Hamilton and reedman-composer Ned Rothenberg. All concerts will take place at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn, a large-scale venue for left-field music.

Helm announces Silencer EP on PAN and Alter, perfect music for hissing at people/things

I don’t know if there’s been a definitive lapse in the amount of disturbing non-metal music being released over the last couple of years, but I know back around 2010, I was all about wallowing to new additions to the Miasmah catalog (for instance), with the lights in my apartment turned off and attempts at human interaction met with literal hisses. Such attempts included text messaging, deliveries from UPS, and the mere presence of my living room lamp over in the corner, which I deliberately attired with a coat and dress shoes just so that I could hiss at it. Have you tried indiscriminately hissing at things/people? There’s a reason why most (if not all) snakes hiss, and it only partially has to do with deterring would-be aggressors; the other part, because it’s enjoyable as fuck.

Anyhow, for 2012, there were but two albums on the dark end of the music spectrum that really caught my ear: the first was the Kreng box set Works for Abattoir Fermé 2007 - 2011, and the other was Impossible Symmetry from London-based sound artist Luke Younger a.k.a. Helm. Listening to the latter’s seamless incorporation of electroacoustic elements brought a welcome freshness… that made me want to weep and curl into a ball for its duration. I thank my relative emotional stability for keeping me upright.

Following up on that absolute (and absolutely ominous) achievement, Helm has new EP Silencer due out September 10 on PAN and Younger’s own Alter label. Four tracks long, you can count on an eerily disarming combination of aged, repeating rhythms and hypnotic drones. Certainly an artist to keep tabs on, in my opinion.

Cyril Hahn and Ryan Hemsworth embark on tour together, capitalizing on the burgeoning Canadawave trend

Goldrush Festival 2013 is here to blow what’s left of your brain after last year: Noveller, MV & EE, Lee Noble, more!

So a lot of ya’ll reading this missed out on the best two days of music in Denver last year. I’m talking about Goldrush. Sure, it was pretty packed on both days; standing room only and crowds spilling out into hallways are always good signs. But some of your lovely, glowing faces were not seen amongst the crowds. There are any number of excuses for this: “it’s too hip,” “my girlfriend was on fire,” “it’s not hip enough,” “my grandmother’s gallbladder was infested with rats,” “my grill was on its period,” “my car broke down,” etc., etc. Listen up though: none of them were good enough. That’s why your body has been punishing you for this last year with bouts of tinnitus and that weird in-grown hair; you didn’t allow it to feel the sounds of Barn Owl, Former Selves, Aloonaluna, Ttotals, and Caddywhompus present, loud and in living color.

However, your moment of redemption is at hand: Goldrush 2013, a fest created by our very own Strauss, is upon us and it’s shaping up to be the screaming orgasm last year’s festival of foreplay promised. Lee Noble, Scammers, Derek Rogers, Cop Circles, Giant Claw, Accordian Crimes, Noveller, MV & EE, and M. Sage make up about half the lineup that will be rolling into Denver on September 27 and 28. If that alone doesn’t get you dripping and/or hard, pills or therapy are probably good options. At the risk of over-stimulating and making a mess, here is another tidbit of info: two-day tickets are $15 for a limited time and a mere $20 after that. How is such a thing possible? Satanic magic, drugs, international conspiracies, and technology from the far future transported back in time to bring unknown auditory pleasures to the Sidewinder Tavern in Denver, one month from now. And all you have to do is buy a ticket and show up. You’re so spoiled.

Boards of Canada to reissue catalogue on vinyl, bringing to the future the past’s sounds of the future on the format of the past

Back in the 1990s, Boards of Canada were considered the sound of the future. But, honey, this ain’t the 1990s. It’s 2013 and Boards of Canada are… still kind of considered the sound of the future. We’ve acknowledged that maybe the idea of the future hasn’t changed a whole lot since 1998, but, hey, nobody said when we were going to arrive at the future. Perhaps this year’s Tomorrow’s Harvest (TMT Review) is just looking toward the same future that Music Has the Right to Children was. That said, perhaps we thought we’d be done with some of the old media formats by now. Surely, by 2013, we’d only listen to Boards of Canada’s future music on future formats, right?

Nah. Not right. If that was the case, Warp would not be reissuing the Boards of Canada catalogue on vinyl. On October 21, the label will be reissuing the band’s first three albums: 1998’s Music Has the Right to Children, 2002’s Geogaddi, and 2005’s The Campfire Headphase. After the prime meat of the Boards of Canada discography is out of the way, the label’s second wave is coming in November 18: 1995’s Twoism mini-album, 2000’s In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP, and 2006’s Trans Canada Highway EP. All of these releases will also include a download code and an original Boards of Canada sticker with a design from the appropriate era. And that era is… THE FUTURE. No, they’re all from roughly whatever year the album came out.

Considering that this Boards of Canada reissue business is a booming market, Warp isn’t the only one getting into it. At some point in the year, Skam Records will reissue 1996’s Hi Scores EP. When will this reissue come out? When will it happen? It will happen in the, yeah, you know, the future.
