Not many names truly expose the contents they represent, Crypt Thing is not one of them. His debut EP Shodan – Japanese for “beginning degree” – is out June 17 on London label squareglass and we’re premiering its title track. A song equal in geologic depth and sonic mystery, “Shodan” grows and fades into the same dark, veiled space. Each track features this space as, slowly, something speaks out. For “Shodan,” muddled voices either creep upon or crept on an enigmatic walker creating, alternating metallic clangs. A twig breaks. A woman whispers “it’s quiet out” repeating “let me free, Jesus let me flee.” Whatever life Shodan is giving them might take it away only to give Crypt Thing life.
