It’s (unofficially) autumn, and Phil Elverum is a restless bird on the move; scattering as he arcs over the land the intensely personal — and yet, publicly arresting — artifacts of his recent emotional/musicological excavation.

Before taking flight for Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and more this November, however, Elverum’s Mount Eerie simulacrum alights to perform TONIGHT (September 20) in Toronto. Check out the complete list of all the autumnal dates down below, and if you’re geographically able, experience for yourself what TMT’s Live Blog struggled to describe only yesterday as a uniquely powerful strain of “public intimacy.”

“Please get a ticket and come.”
-Phil Elverum

ADVERTISEMENT:
I'm going on a tour of Mount Eerie concerts in Europe in November. Until then, we have the oh-so-fashionable vinyl; and then we also have the oh-so-fashionably-obsolescent Lee Noble: the Los Angeles-based musician who’s done his part to shine a light on the lowly cassette. A good portion of Noble’s efforts over the past seven years have been released on cassette; in fact, the No Kings record label that he now principally runs from his SoCal home base has essentially been a tapes-only operation since its inception. (What’s that, Lee? More tapes with careful artwork consideration?)

Although it represents a continuation of the improved fidelity, intelligibility, and heterogeneity of recent albums like Ruiner and Un Look, Noble’s upcoming release, The Hell of You Come In, still promises more of the same kind of fog-enveloped songwriting that should capture the hearts and minds of any self-respecting member of the International Reverb Fan Club. But be warned: Noble seems no longer content with merely playing folk underwater (heck, the new one even boasts multiple earnest-sounding synth tracks!).

The Hell of You Come In is out October 27. Look for the cassette courtesy of No Kings, with Pale Blue Records co-sponsoring the digital release. Spotify-heads can stream the track “Electra” on October 10. Until then, you’ll just have to content yourself with digitally streaming some highlights from the aforementioned Un Look via Noble’s Bandcamp down below. I do.)

Now then, great news: we officially don’t have to miss Sun City Girls quite as much anymore! Because Alan Bishop — the big boss of Sublime Frequencies Sun City’s resident sun god — is back on the experimental folk-rock scene with a huge new album. Comprised of 35 (!) brand new songs recorded in Cairo between 2014 and 2017 — and featuring members of The Invisible Hands, The Spoils, Master Musicians of Bukkake, The Dwarfs of East Agouza, and Climax Golden Twins — this new jukebox of megajams is entitled With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven (who’s hungry?). It’s due November 3 as a 90’s-nostalgia-ready double-CD via the Abduction label, and it comes with a “24-page booklet with artwork, lyrics, and credits.” Wow, B., Wow!

Okay, case closed, right? End of TMT news post. That’s all, folks!!!

…OH WAIT. Nope. I sorta forgot to mention: because this is Alan Bishop we’re talking about here (and because you might not be able to find a working CD player after all), the album is ALSOcoming out as three separate LP’s, each with its own release date and title. Volume 1, SUB-entitled Natural Wonder comes out on October 6; while Volume 2 (A Mark Twain August) hits on October 20, with the final volume (Heathen Folklore) following on November 3. Got all that?

Good. Hmm…well, either way, that fine, generous, and glistening example of a human being Jason Lescalleet has heard your/my/our irrational lamentation “loud and clear” and has decided to do something characteristically “soft and murky” about it.

And so, with all the gentle power of his Glistening Examples imprint, he’s just opened his gentle palm and released two new soft, float-y, downy feathers into the Tuesday wind. First up, we have Darren McClure’s Nature Mirror, comprised of four impressionistic vignettes which were “composed and recorded during late spring 2017, as the rice fields of Nagano [Japan] were being filled with water and planted” in a process known as “waking up the fields.” According to McClure, “stillness, parallel lines, and nature are represented in the music, just as clouds and mountains are reflected in the flooded fields.”

Next, there’s TIME + PLACE, a recondite, contemplative, and fog-enshrouded new offering (also comprised of four long-form tracks) from the Vancouver, BC-based composer Joda Clément. Both albums were mastered by Lescalleet himself (for MAXIMUM, LOUDNESS WAR-PULVERIZING POWER!) at his Glistening Labs, USA and are stream-able down below.

If you like what you hear, pick up Nature Mirror right here and TIME + PLACE over here. And if you’re feeling really nostalgic for the old “New Music Tuesday” effect, pick up both albums’ physical CD editions — both of which also come with some stupifyingly serene photography and design action. You’ll have more soothing new music than you can possibly listen to on your evening commute in no time flat.

Ahhh; I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling a little better about Tuesday already…

Nature Mirror by Darren McClure

Nature Mirror tracklisting:

01. There must be a new holy new mixtape out now on Berlin’s venerable Janus label. And this time, the celebrants are the pair of stellar Danish producers Why Be and Beacktearer.

It’s no secret that we’ve been worshipers of Why Be and Backtearer for a little while now. Both Why Be’s Snipestreet and Backtearer’s Swear impressed us in 2015, and since then, these two have popped up on amazing mixes and records with the likes of Elysia Crampton, Chino Amobi, Rabit and many more. Pretty heavenly company all around, no?

And now the blessings continue with the dc mixtape, which Janus describes as “an oneiric suite, moving through expressive registers alternately liturgical, pastoral, and diaristic.” Though the two international producers have joined forces before on “Freedom Amph,” a track off Swear, this EP marks their first complete collaborative project (the cover art was also contributed by none other than TMT-crush Chino Amobi). Setting aside the caustic club sounds they both frequent, dc consists of one 15-minute composite suite of elevatory, processional ambient music. It’s as beautiful and as beatless as either artist has ever been.

Stream the that angelic mix of beautiful, beatless hymns for yourself down below. And of course, you can capture it forever on vinyl, too.

The mass is now ended. It’s called Experiencing the Deposit of Faith, and its twelve tracks of alternatingly ethereal and funky mood-elevators collectively represent the follow-up to last year’s not-UN-awesome album Serpent Music. Seriously. Gratification doesn’t get much more instant than that.

Second, as FACT reports, Bowie has also apparently signed with the one and only Warp label for the foreseeable future! The announcement was revealed via this tour announcement on Twitter. No word on his first official release for those prestigious purveyors of next-level ambient and electronica as of yet, but perhaps we’ll see some previews at this some of this fall’s festival appearances???

Either way, I don’t know about you, but just thinking about what’s in store is going to keep me wide-the-fuck-awake for quite some time. There is something so pure about a duo, however. Not having a third, fourth, or 299th person throwing a volatile opinion into the work, we are often blessed with an imaginative mix created by two talented souls. Batman + Robin, peanut butter + jelly, Gwyneth Paltrow + Huey Lewis in that goddamn awful karaoke flick…some things are just meant to go together as duos!

And some singletons make any duo perfect. Case in point: wethinks any pairing involving either guitarist extraordinaire Steve Gunn or rhythm ace John Truscinski would produce world-beating results. The tandem will release its new record, Bay Head November 3 on Three Lobed Recordings.

Bay Head is the third Gunn-Truscinski Duo album and latest since 2012’s outstanding Ocean Parkway. Not long after, some elder and experienced mastah appears in order to humble the brash individual by means of a very physical reality check.

Now, just imagine your average recent convert to footwork as the young fighter about to get schooled, and you’ve got a decent analogy for what’s about to happen when the one and only Traxman reappears with a new full-length album, just as some rising TEKLIFE stars are starting to make distributive names for themselves. You might THINK know something about the footwork sound if you’ve heard Taso or DJ Manny. But YOU KNOW NOTHING absent a track from Traxman entering your earholes, shaving your head, and dressing you in a robe that keeps the one arm perpetually cool.

Traxman’s newest ceremonial beatdown is called Tekvision, and it’s out November 3 on the increasingly busy TEKLIFE Records (here’s where you can pre-order the limited edition vinyl). In terms of well-marketed full-length albums, it follows most recently 2014’s Da Mind of Traxman Vol 2. DJ Earl)” (listenable below), the drums and synth rule with the cool, iron fist of relative minimalism. Weighing in at a hefty 19 tracks, The OOZ is out October 13 via True Panther Sounds in North America and XL Recordings in Europe, and will be the first King Krule album since 2013’s Six Feet Beneath the Moon.

If that weren’t king-kool enough, the announcement of The OOZ comes to us accompanied by a video for a great cut off the album, “Dum Surfer.” In the 2Spooky4U clip, Marshall rolls on a gurney right into a gig at an off-brand Twin Peaks Roadhouse. There, he and his band of undead ghouls rock and/or roll through “Dum Surfer” for a bunch of unsavory and sweaty-looking characters (I didn’t see James and Freddy anywhere, but the Fireman might’ve been diggin’ on it in the back?)…Idk, music videos are weird, right? I’m sure it’s all a really compelling metaphor when you sit down and think about it. And no, that last one isn’t just “the wrong way but faster.” How dare you!? Get off of this web page!

Now, Ryan Power is a reasonable man, and he knows that you need a melodic foundation in order to write something that can even be considered close to something resembling a pop song. But, contrary to popular belief, Ryan Power also knows that there are literally zero rules when it comes to writing music. (Just take a listen to some of the stuff we write about on TMT, amirite???) Case in point: Power’s upcoming They Sell Doomsday, an album that delights in dragging pop about as far “out-there” as it can get away with.

A double album (and Power’s seventh album overall), They Sell Doomsday is unpredictable through and through. Grounded in melody by Power’s prominent, smooth, tender jazz guitar; it’s fifteen tracks seamlessly integrate more “weird” elements such as out-of-tune, warbly synths, dancefloor-esque drum machines, pitch-shifted vocals, and mid-song tempo changes. At times, songs can feel more like funhouse mirror reflections of pop music as we know it here in the non-disturbingly long torso-ed world. It’s truly a trick that only an artist this far into his career — and as assured in his talents to craft compelling music as Power is — could pull off.

They Sell Doomsday is out October 20 via NNA Tapes, in all of its double-LP glory, but you can pre-order the album from NNA here right now (if you hurry, the first 100 double-LP orders will come on on opaque purple and green vinyl!)
