I mean, WHAT WILL HAPPEN when your typical mom and dad on good ol’ Main Street USA stumble upon lyrics recollecting “cum on my lips,” a poem conceived after collecting images of possibly-underage sex-workers? Other long-time Xiu Xiu fans and myself eagerly await the aural experience of one-thousand window shades being frantically closed nigh-simultaneously! And GUESS WHAT, mom n’ pop? Xiu Xiu are so coming to your town next.

No, seriously. They may actually be coming to your town next, given the North American tour that’s just been announced for August into September in support of FORGET (one of our favorite albums of 2017’s first quarter)…and don’t forget our whole Twin Peaks extravaganza that lasted for a week last month. Following Babyfather’s most recent mixtape, Escrow’s Universal Soulja Vol.1 is a one-track, 24-minute release, tweeted out by Hyperdub earlier today. It’s an admittedly challenging listen, featuring an unrelenting procession of harsh noise and Escrow’s disconnected truths that plays like an extended version of the notorious “Prolific Deamons” off BBF.

Smoke something. You’d figure that a genre so conducive to improvisation would find more of its participants willing to indulge the synthesis revolution that came about in the 70s. But nope; the Miami-born and New York-nurtured (beginning in 1966) Bruce Ditmas was one of seemingly few within the scene to fully embrace the new tech while simultaneously boosting his capital-J Jazz bonafides.

For instance, the rarely-incorporated Moog 1130 Drum Controller was the novel instrument of choice for the otherwise-drummer, and it features prominently on the two solo LPs that Ditmas released in 1977, Aeray Dust and Yellow. Those two albums would mark the rough propulsion of an international career playing “normal” drums for “normal” jazz bands, though an interest in synthesis and experimentation did persist concurrently.

And if you’re looking for proof that Ditmas hasn’t just out “urban-frolicking” with Gil Evans, Paul Bley, or Dino Saluzzi since that period? Look no further than the newly-minted 10” album, entitled Visioni Sconvolgenti, which has just been released courtesy of Finders Keepers and Demdike’s Stare’s Dead-Cert label. The record, “pressed up in an edition of 500 copies with artwork by Andy Votelis,” is an occasionally frightening summation of the experiments that Ditmas has been engaged in over the last three decades, wherein “percussive manipulation” combine with field recording techniques to create something that sounds surprisingly modern. Out September 8 both physically and digitally, Fox’s latest seven-song mission statement is being called “an exploration of selfhood” that employs “new methods of externalizing his polyrhythmic virtuosity into non-physical realms” and which “signals both a reconciliation of disparate musical ventures and a new nirvanic stage in the artist’s oeuvre.”

More concretely, the manifestation and subsequent transfer of these energies is achieved “through responsive environments tethered to various aspects of the performance” (e.g. sensors attached to Fox’s drum kit trigger various virtual instruments invented for each piece, creating new and inventive tonal pallets which Fox then “communes-with” as each piece progresses). To achieve this wild-but-controlled sonic synergy, Fox employs hefty doses of Sensory Percussion, a software system which captures drum vibrations and analyses those signals, allowing performers to map their playing to various electronic controls. Fox himself describes this tactile approach as being akin to “sensing the emotionality and physicality of the world with the senses and through mental processes — about touching the walls of a pitch black room.” (And, speaking of the physical world, The Gradual Progression also includes contributions from fellow HUMAN musicians Curtis Santiago, Michael Beharie, Maria Kim Grand, and Justin Frye — each of whom lends not only a unique instrument to the mix, but a unique energy as well.)

But enough of this tantalizing talk about polyrhythmic virtuosity and energy-transfer between physical and non-physical realms; time to actually hear all these incredible technical, intra- and inter-personal concepts IN-ACTION. To do so, check out the video for album track “Catching an L” down below. The clip’s footage was shot by Fox and “re-purposed” by Sunshine Soup co-director Johann Rashid, and the track’s restless, morphing, funk-jazz pulse will have you nodding your head and sympathetically tapping your pre-ordering finger in no time.

The Gradual Progression tracklisting:

01. It’ll be released on September 15 on Mexican Summer, and you can pre-order it now. Not coincidentally, the album is inspired by…Bobby Jameson: an L.A. musician who was presumed dead until 2007, when he suddenly resurfaced after 35 reclusive years to “pen” his autobiography — in the form of blogs and YouTube videos. “His book and life resonated with me to such a degree that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him,” Pink tells.

The 13-track Dedicated to Bobby Jameson is, in a sense, a concept album that, according to Pink’s press release, “begins at the end and ends at the beginning.” Pink goes on to explain the record in his own words: “We follow the protagonist through a battery of tests and milestones, the first of which sees him reborn into life out of death. From there, he seesaws his way between the innocent love and the rock-solid edifice of childhood-worn trauma that together constitute his lifelong initiation into the realm of artifice and theatrical disposability.”

The album’s first single, out August 17 (pre-order it here), is the airy and predictably synth-filled “Another Weekend,” for which you can check out the depressingly cheerful video down below. The song marks Pink’s first new solo material since 2014’s pom pom — a record whose glowing prog-pop tracks can, in hindsight, now be seen as pointing toward this fine, summery new material all along — but its jangle-y shuffles belie a shiny new set of regrets from Pink: “Another weekend I can’t rewind/Another day not working for me.” And so it goes. (Happy first miserable day of summer, everyone!)

Dedicated to Bobby Jameson tracklist:

01. And that’s why (I assume) they’ve gone ahead and announced that NOT ONLY is their latest LP (and first for the fine R&S label) entitled Warmth; but it’s also chock-full of the kind of steamy, sexy, pulsing, panting, grooving house music jams which are basically guaran-damn-teed to raise my pulse to a nice, vaguely-aerobic 130 bpm. No fuss, no muss!

Continuing to “find inspiration through hardware instrumentation and improvisation,” Haar and Steinmsan’s past several years’ worth of “intense live performances on sound systems throughout Europe and US” helped to generate and inform the ten new calorie-burning bangers packed into this album.

Blondes’ miraculous new miracle fat-loss cure isn’t street-legal until August 11, but you can pre-order it here now and check out one of its sample-workouts, the explosive “KDM,” streaming down below. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be drenched in a gross pool of your own (oddly milky) sweat in about seven minutes. After which you’ll feel so goddamn invigorated that you could eat a barbecued horse! Ahead of the official release of Laurel Halo’s third LP Dust on Friday, Hyperdub has made the entire album available for streaming on their Soundcloud page. Is this a thank you gift to the world for doing all we can to survive the unprecedented geopolitical hell we currently find ourselves in? Seems likely.

Of course, you’re thinking: that news isn’t substantial enough to devote an entire article to, right? Well, as USUAL, you’d be wrong…but, in this case, there is indeed more to the story: Laurel Halo has some new tour dates! I know, I know, you should be very excited — particularly if you live in New York or a major population center in Europe (that’s a hint). And, as if that wasn’t enough already, you’ll be happy to know you might also get the opportunity to experience her imminent third album, Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia — that is, of course, assuming your spiritual self doesn’t return to the stars by September 8, which is when the album arrives via My Own Pleasure (no no, the pleasure’s all mine).

Before you set off on this profound galactic journey, though; know that the new album is “a seven-movement odyssey composed for analogue synthesizers and full, traditional 29-piece colliery brass band,” which I’ve always said is the peanut-butter-and-jelly of postmodern musical ensembles. Peel has said of the record, “I wanted these huge slabs of planetary sounds to echo the excitement and wonder of our human need to explore and develop,” so it’s sure to be the soundtrack of choice for Martian potato gardeners everywhere.

But wait! Before your mind expands too much — click here to pre-order the album, take a listen to the single “Sunrise Through the Dusty Nebula” below, and picture yourself as an insignificant conglomeration of outcast matter drifting through the empty planes of space, because, get this: that’s basically what you are!
