I don’t “get” what the big deal is with computers. Computers are not trustworthy, their processing power scares me, and I avoid using them whenever possible. Even now, you’re only reading this news story because I hand-wrote it out on a roll of toilet paper, which was then delivered via carrier pigeon to Tiny Mix Tapes headquarters, located in scenic Parts Unknown, where an intrepid, unpaid intern inputs and submits everything for me.

For Claude Speeed (the third “e” means he’s serious) however, computers are a gateway, a means to communicate abstract thoughts and feelings through music. On Infinity Ultra, his second full-length album, the Scotland-born/Berlin-based artist draws inspiration from the likes of abandoned places, sleep paralysis, and children’s anime to create electronic music that is droning, euphoric, monolithic, and towering all at the same time. Or, as Claude Speeed himself more elegantly puts it, Infinity Ultra is his way of, “conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age; and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response — a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future.” (Told you he was serious.)

Infinity Ultra is out July 14 via Planet Mu. You can pre-order the album in all the glorious, modern formats you can imagine here, and can listen to album track “Fifth Fortress,” down below. Dust off your field-frolicking gear! Prepare your tiny homes for transport! Because the fantastic psych-folk family known as Faun Fables are set to storm the mythical woods of the Midwest, the rolling hills of the Pacific Northwest, the yawning deserts of California, and the fertile fields of the South—a.k.a., you know: a bunch of small clubs and dive bars—on their triumphant 2017 summer tour!

For the uninitiated looking to align their energies with the band at any of their upcoming stops, “prepare thyselves for a night of bewitching sounds, song, dance and mythical storytelling” at venues with such quaint, pastoral names as “The Starry Plough.” It’s enough to make you want a mug of sustainably-sourced mead and a quadrille with the shepherd’s daughter.

The band is hitting basically every corner of the U.S. on the extended trek, which follows the release of their 2016 album Born of the Sun. You’ll have plenty of time to practice your vocal harmonies, though, because the droll fun doesn’t begin until the June 10 show in Claremont, CA.

So with all that said, prepare yourself to swoon like this magical pixie-child does in the live video below. The second face, meanwhile, looks like it just received a mainline dose of morphine, because on the albums that are reasonably considered Henriksen’s solo efforts (Strjon and Cartography, to highlight two semi-recent examples), voice, trumpet, and other instruments aren’t confusing the hell out of you by virtue of their deliberate discord. Those two first helped out on the 2004 album Chiaroscuro, and in a note accompanying the announcement of Towards Language, Henriksen makes sure to acknowledge the “musicians and producers that have encouraged and inspired” him over the years.

The music on this new one supposedly has a connection to Places of Worship, though a typical studio (probably not an un-holy place for someone like Henriksen, mind you) served as the typical setting for this “chamber music-like approach.” Either way, pre-order the sacred results here, and check out the divine “Groundswell” down below:

Towards Language tracklisting:

01. School is already back in session, you guys. Because as officially christened Joyful Noise Recordings Artists in Residence, the scholarly ladies and gentlemen of Deerhoof — along with a bunch of its related side projects —plan to studiously release five LPs in three installments throughout 2017.

The first installment features two split 12-inches that includes various Deerhoof-related artists: Nervous Cop, Oneone, Murmurer, and Les Bon Hommes. These three are actually OUT NOW and available digitally here for a pay-what-you-want ($1 minimum) price, with the proceeds going to Brand New Congress, a political action committee of former Bernie Sanders campaign staffers.

The second installment, expected later this summer, will be a new, bona fide Deerhoof record. Like all good “second installments,” it’ll be followed by followed by a “third installment” in late fall comprised of two more splits featuring four as-yet secret artists.

Alas, precious few details regarding that new Deerhoof album have surfaced yet, but we do know that a limited version will come as “a hand-numbered, custom wooden box set” containing all four side-project splits as colored LPs, in addition to the album. This set will be available to subscribers of the Joyful Noise Artist in Residence series or for $100.

Meanwhile, you can find more info on Deerhoof’s Artist in Residence series at Joyful Noise’s website and watch the video trailer below to preview tracks. But clearly the Canadian musician, otherwise known for his work under the Manitoba and Caribou monikers, has developed a comprehensive solution to this: instead of releasing another standard studio album of typical length (which isn’t a knock to 2012’s Jiaolong), Daphni has just announced that he’ll be helming Fabriclive 93, the next iteration in the mix series sponsored by the recently resuscitated London club. And, in contrast to most Fabriclive iterations released thus far, nearly every song on Fabriclive 93 is a Daphni track! (Hey: nobody said that tooting your own horn is inherently a bad thing — especially when each expertly crafted “toot” serves to further compel the aggressive shaking of one’s toot-maker.)

Snaith’s compositional process for this giant new megamix actually recalls how Daphni project got started in the first place. According to the man himself, diving deep into his back catalog wasn’t really an option, so he often chose to compose songs from scratch in order to establish the utmost congruity. “It was essentially a studio recording,” says Snaith, which is certainly just fine with anyone out there who’s been aching for more Daphni material.

Fabriclive 93 is set for release July 21, but you can pre-order its composite 27 tracks-worth of horn-tooteryright here. This is a big thing. It’s a big thing both in its “thingness,” its physicality — and also its immaterial, historical quality. How about that? It’s a 4D thing. The Photographs of Charles Duvelle bends time and space more than any other album in history. How cool is that? It’s like a massive celestial object with its own gravity. It’s like a quantum string. It’s like the übermensch thinking they’re the center of the world. I write to you, reader, across these dual planes in an attempt to reach you! To make you feel! To break the hyper-speed music news cycle that deadens our minds and our senses!! Lo and behold!!! Let me DE-REIFY us!!!!

OK…look, I see you leering at me through the screen. I’d better get to the point: I have to write about the actual album and give you the frickin’ “press lowdown” on the music and the formats and the release date and where you can get the thing. If I don’t, my editor banishes me from the TMT forums, and then I can no longer info-tain TMT’s audience of millions — and then I just become another Raskolnikov kid bumbling about musicology in a Bushwick coffee shop. AND THEN I have to start my own blog. (Do you dislike me yet?)

Well, here goes nothing. Or maybe it will be “something?” Or maybe. Or maybe… it will be more than something. Ahhh-hhhem:

Charles Duvelle, an important figure in musicology and a pioneer of field recording. The Frenchman traveled all over the world to document the musical practices of indigenous cultures, releasing hundreds of recordings on his own imprint Disques Ocora. Check the discography for an encyclopedic archive of the world’s musics. Carl Sagan even included one of Duvelle’s Benin recordings among the Voyager Golden Records which were sent off to space on the Voyager spacecraft, to be picked up perhaps by E.T., or maybe by the Engineers (if they’re still out there; I’m seeing Alien Covenant tonight and I’m psyched).

But as the Voyager continues to drift — and as E.T. awaits his first taste of Duvelle’s lovely ear for human sound-making — those of us still on earth just get more and more of it! The Sublime Frequencies label has put together a big ol’ bundled package that includes a 2xCD compilation of unreleased and extended recordings from Africa and Asia and an art book showing off 246 of Duvelle’s field photographs, as well as a lengthy interview conducted by Sublime Frequencies co-founder Hisham Mayet. The book is a luxurious thing, “printed on 170-GSM LumiSilk matte art paper and bound in gray buckram with gold-foil stamping on the cover and spine,” paying tribute to Ocora’s great design work. Check out all the info, including full press release, bundle contents, and track samples, through US distributor Forced Exposure.
