The bells are chiming. The thurible swings back and forth. The mass is back in session. There must be a new holy new mixtape out now on Berlin’s venerable Janus label. And this time, the celebrants are the pair of stellar Danish producers Why Be and Beacktearer.

It’s no secret that we’ve been worshipers of Why Be and Backtearer for a little while now. Both Why Be’s Snipestreet and Backtearer’s Swear impressed us in 2015, and since then, these two have popped up on amazing mixes and records with the likes of Elysia Crampton, Chino Amobi, Rabit and many more. Pretty heavenly company all around, no?

And now the blessings continue with the dc mixtape, which Janus describes as “an oneiric suite, moving through expressive registers alternately liturgical, pastoral, and diaristic.” Though the two international producers have joined forces before on “Freedom Amph,” a track off Swear, this EP marks their first complete collaborative project (the cover art was also contributed by none other than TMT-crush Chino Amobi). Setting aside the caustic club sounds they both frequent, dc consists of one 15-minute composite suite of elevatory, processional ambient music. It’s as beautiful and as beatless as either artist has ever been.

Stream the that angelic mix of beautiful, beatless hymns for yourself down below. And of course, you can capture it forever on vinyl, too.

The mass is now ended. Go in peace.

dc tracklisting:

o1. dc
Backtearer Chino Amboi Why Be Janus YYAA Tue, 19 Sep 2017 13:59:24 +0000 E. Mondays can be rough shits, can’t they?…Especially when you take that first sip of freshly brewed drip coffee in the morning only to realize that you accidentally ground-up a bunch of Cocoa Puffs instead of coffee beans (again).

Luckily, Turin-based, Tennessee-born musician Sean Bowie — a.k.a. Yves Tumor — a.k.a. the world’s “grooviest” ambient artist — has your groggy ass covered this afternoon with with not one but TWO exciting announcements guaran-damn-teed to get your blood pumping and your pupils dilating.

First, turns out he has just recently unleashed an entire new digital album into the world! It’s called Experiencing the Deposit of Faith, and its twelve tracks of alternatingly ethereal and funky mood-elevators collectively represent the follow-up to last year’s not-UN-awesome album Serpent Music. If, like me, you’re still in need of a one or a dozen quick pick-me-ups at this point in the day, you’re in luck: you can stream the whole damn thing down below and download it now right over here. Seriously. Gratification doesn’t get much more instant than that.

Second, as FACT reports, Bowie has also apparently signed with the one and only Warp label for the foreseeable future! The announcement was revealed via this tour announcement on Twitter. No word on his first official release for those prestigious purveyors of next-level ambient and electronica as of yet, but perhaps we’ll see some previews at this some of this fall’s festival appearances???

Either way, I don’t know about you, but just thinking about what’s in store is going to keep me wide-the-fuck-awake for quite some time. Maybe too awake. Like: I gotta Jazzercise some of these feelings out. There is something so pure about a duo, however. Not having a third, fourth, or 299th person throwing a volatile opinion into the work, we are often blessed with an imaginative mix created by two talented souls. Batman + Robin, peanut butter + jelly, Gwyneth Paltrow + Huey Lewis in that goddamn awful karaoke flick…some things are just meant to go together as duos!

And some singletons make any duo perfect. Not long after, some elder and experienced mastah appears in order to humble the brash individual by means of a very physical reality check.

Now, just imagine your average recent convert to footwork as the young fighter about to get schooled, and you’ve got a decent analogy for what’s about to happen when the one and only Traxman reappears with a new full-length album, just as some rising TEKLIFE stars are starting to make distributive names for themselves. And no, that last one isn’t just “the wrong way but faster.” How dare you!? Get off of this web page!

Now, Ryan Power is a reasonable man, and he knows that you need a melodic foundation in order to write something that can even be considered close to something resembling a pop song. But, contrary to popular belief, Ryan Power also knows that there are literally zero rules when it comes to writing music. (Just take a listen to some of the stuff we write about on TMT, amirite???) Case in point: Power’s upcoming They Sell Doomsday, an album that delights in dragging pop about as far “out-there” as it can get away with.

A double album (and Power’s seventh album overall), They Sell Doomsday is unpredictable through and through. At times, songs can feel more like funhouse mirror reflections of pop music as we know it here in the non-disturbingly long torso-ed world. Recorded during Ina/GRM’s 2016 Présences Électronique Festival in Paris, Escaped Language is a contrasting mind trip to the 2015 collab-heavy Deviate From Balance — in that it is a 100% solo-assembled rumination, offering proof that, yup, often the best thing to be is to be a Gang of One.

Btw — record release day is also tour start day for Wiese, as he will embark on an extended set of dates opening for the ever-engrossing Zola Jesus, beginning in L.A. at the Regent Theater on September 20. This tour (dates below) is something of an unconventional music fan’s wet dream, as both musicians have new albums out, and are never less than riveting live. So: see you out there, my fellow gangs of one!

Sprawling Escaped Language tracklist:

01. Back in 2014, we were a socially-conscious world fixated on combating ALS by pouring ice-cold water over our heads and raising awareness for men’s health issues by growing hair on our upper lips. In 2010 coffee was only $2.65 a cup! Ah, what times to be alive!

Surely Howard knows that changing your name across your career can greatly hurt your marketability, but he obviously gives no more than precisely two shits about that conventional exchange thinking. And, really, his musical solo alias isn’t a far stretch from what he is called in the day-to-day. In 2013, as Howard Ivans, Ivan Howard released the soulful footstomper “Red Face Boy”/“Pillows” single on Spacebomb Records. Now, Ivans —or “Howard,” or whateverya wanna call him — has resurfaced to release his debut full length on September 22.

Co-produced by Spacebomb’s Trey Pollard and Cameron Ralston and featuring (in addition to the considerable talents of Ivans) the Spacebomb house band, Beautiful Tired Bodies will be released by, you guessed it, Spacebomb. Weyes Blood, came out not so long ago, and followers of the Los Angeles-based folk artist may recall the official video for the track, “Do You Need My Love.” The first half of the video has a ton of deliberately awkward staring between these characters living in the woods, and the overall video ends with those characters (+1 bear) getting alcohol-wasted and ultimately “going away together,” via a seemingly anachronistic mode of transportation.

At the time, the video played-out as a mere calling card of Mering’s subtle brand of whimsy, but right about now, the damn thing smacks of PROPHECY: because Weyes Blood and Sub Pop, after oh so lovingly staring into one another’s eyes for an equally-uncomfortable amount of time, have apparently just run off into the woods together!

Huh. In their relatively brief existence, they’ve already given a dedicated platform to some of the genres biggest stars — like DJ Lag, Dominowe, TLC Fam — and now, Emo Kid (from Inanda, in the Etafuleni area township of Durban), with his first vinyl EP Gqomtera.

And while Emo Kid had tracks on early Gqom Oh! label compilations, the 23 year-old producer claims he intended this eight track EP to serve as a comprehensive overview of the Sgubhu sound — a “Durban journey” — adding Emo Kid’s signature flavor to the genre’s familiar, hard-hitting rhythms. The bouncy “Digital Response (feat. BlaqChild)” is an excellent introduction; full of forward momentum, the track accumulates layers slowly, adding chattering vocals, a repetitive, needly synth, and fat bass over a syncopated 4 to the floor rhythm.
