The band’s debut album (last year’s self-titled, full-length affair) was full of subterranean echoes, creepy dirges, and stuttering sonic sentiments whose form and content were rooted in the freestyle improvisations of bandmates Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada and Amon Melgarejo.

The subtly ominous, rough-around-the-edges vibe of those freewheeling 8-track sketches continues with the first song off of the upcoming Summer Came Early EP, conveniently titled “Summer Came Early.” Repetitive, reverb-drenched guitar, soft, pitch-bent synths, and a plodding rhythm section lull the listener into a comfortably hypnotic state, while Anika explores the peaks and valleys between Nico’s trippier moments and Broadcast’s Trish Keenan as she ruminates on the fate of placebo-ed-up populace in the midst of global catastrophe a-brewing.

In order to get a jump on next June, Summer Came Early will be released on November 10 and is up for preorder on 12-inch vinyl and digital mediums through the Sacred Bones label and the group’s Bandcamp page. The EP will also include new tracks, an outtake or two from Exploded View, and some pretty vibrantly sunny (yet strangely unsettling) artwork. Speaking of “sunny,” limited edition “Summer Orange” vinyl pressings are also available. And speaking of “unsettling,” check out that apocalyptic official video for “Summer Came Early” down below. It’s not the chillier weather or shorter days; it’s that damned “clarity” effect that all that crisp, cold air has on the surrounding landscape. You know: all those obnoxiously vivid colors, stark contrasts, and sharply defined edges? Yuk. Who needs THAT shit when they’re trying to relax under their covers, not talk, and stay mellow in the morning???

Luckily, as of THIS VERY FRIDAY (October 20) the HAZE is back in town. After two solid (read: amorphous) years of touring, writing, and toiling to refine their patented stoner-rock blend of blurry, blissful indistinctness, the Burlington, Vermont shoegazers known as Sleeping In are about to swoop in to take the edges off of this hard-ass change of seasons with the self-release of their debut full-length album let you in.

Whether you like your gauze-y, hazy navel-gazing deep fried to blistering, amp-malfunctioning perfection (a la Dinosaur Jr. and Hum) or blown-out past the cold reaches of the Kuiper asteroid belt (Slowdive-style), let you in has got your warm, toasty, finitude-loathing ass covered. Not convinced? Just check out the album track “Pine” down below — with it’s cosmic vocal melodies soaring amorphously high over a landscape of crumbling-mountain guitar riffs and lava-rock beats — and you’ll feel better about hitting the snooze alarm in no time.

let you in tracklisting:

01. dirtbike
02. pine
03. sink in your skin
04. thorn & blood
05. displace
06. angel
07. warmer
08. stay the night
09. wither
10. u
11. bully
Sleeping In Tue, 17 Oct 2017 17:46:52 +0000 Dan Smart 159583 at https://www.tinymixtapes.com Microkingdom loads us up with three releases (Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats + Exotic Package + Vultures Crystals) and tour dates with Talibam! 2017-10-17T11:37:53-04:00 https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/microkingdom-loads-us-three-new-releases-and-tour?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tmt Music
Microkingdom is a Baltimore-based trio consisting of experimental composer Will Redman on drums, Ex-OXES Marc Miller on guitar, and reeds MVP John Dierker on saxophone. Together, they have decided to spend the next few weeks overwhelming all of us with three huge, colossal, epic releases — Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats, Exotic Package, and Vultures Crystals (all to be available / released by Friends Records) — and one nice, cool, totally reasonably-sized tour.

The first release, Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats (which dropped October 13), is a slow-burn, a steady cruise through the eternal night of the cosmic unknown, on the way to nowhere and everywhere, falling into folding space and time and obeying the traffic signs. It has a hypnotic and calming effect, a superior kind of novocaine calm one attains when surfing the storm surge of information overload while juggling simultaneous existence in parallel universes. This smooth ride wasn’t born yesterday: it was born on the side of the interstate in an 8-bit racing game, spent its teenage years pacing around well-lit sets on Hype Williams video shoots, doing the Ringu shuffle and learning to fuse bizarre food combinations that even the Travel Channel declined to air.

Well, if Jeep Beats is a slow-burn, and burner phones are the graffiti art of cellular technology, then Exotic Package is the graffiti wall visualizer in Microkingdom’s burner phone, which isn’t running out of minutes anytime soon. The second release (coming November 1) is a collection of unreleased tracks from 2007-2017. The epic decade span and scope of the compilation does nothing to resist cohesion. Not to say that the compilation isn’t all over the place. Not to say that Microkingdom aren’t all over the place, by design. Using their “default working method for all of our albums,” the tracks on Exotic Package are “improvisations sampled and developed into new compositions with a computer,” Will Redman explains. It’s conscientious chaos; we come to expect anything and therefore accept everything this pumpjack brings to the surface.

Then there’s Vultures Crystals, the first in a series of unprocessed improv albums and a clean break from their default album-building process. The release focuses on the raw screwball style of live Microkingdom in their skeletal duo form. Perhaps this release will be most reflective of their live tour dates — which, by the way, kick off THIS FRIDAY (October 20) and will consist of Will Redman and Marc Miller, without John Dierker. As I say: “perhaps.” But what beast will we be dealing with next?

Stay Tuned for more updates on the latter two releases, and stream and purchase Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats here.

Return to the Valley of the Jeep Beats tracklisting:

01. But like an ill-fated stepdad or apologetic lover slipping a last-minute gift through our doors at 11:59 PM, our parceirxs at Príncipe are delivering their final kick in 2017’s pants: a solo debut from one of the labels most extraordinary producers, DJ Lycox.

Sonhos & Pesadelos (Google assures me this means “dreams and nightmares”) arrives November 17 on Príncipe. (FYI, It doesn’t include Madigan’s original recordings with the Riot Grrrl group Tattle Tale, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for those. But PRO TIP: some of their tracks are compiled on the recent release I Bleed: A Decade of Song, if you are looking for a primer.)

Next year, Shive — who is also a co-founder of the Icarus Project, an organization dedicated to providing a care community outside the often-alienating mental health mainstream —will also be releasing a new album (entitled Covert Constellations), as well as premiering a new “music and mental health doc-opera” called Whisper Rapture: A Bonfire Madigan Suite. Yeah. Holy shit.

This show will probably be rad. I am not an Animal Collective expert, but I do know one thing about them with certainty: Sung Tongs is a great album. Hearing two grown men in a recording studio sing a call-and-response refrain of “meeeooowwww… kitties!” is one of the great musical gifts given us by the first decade of the 21st century. (For extra verisimilitude, the album will be performed only by the animals who birthed it — Avey Tare and Panda Bear — without their fuzzy friends Deakin and Geologist, who didn’t play on it originally.)

The concert, which takes place at the Knockdown Center in Flushing, Queens, on Saturday, December 2, will also mark the first time Animal Collective have performed the album in its entirety. And while it’s definitely not unusual for bands to reprise their classic albums in-full at festivals these days, it’s actually a pretty “experimental” move for AnCo, whose old norm was to bewilder audiences with sets almost entirely composed of new material. Maybe in a couple years we’ll get some gigs with a hologram Deakin, eh?

Oh yeah, okay, and, let’s see: umm…a number of other artists significant to Pitchfork’s history are still to-be-announced, um…tickets are on sale now over here…presented by Virgin Mobile or whatever…blah blah blah. The London composer has just announced a new album of bloody brilliant melancholia that was inspired by Stuart Gatt’s short film, “The Dead Sea.” The album — entitled Reflections on a Dead Sea — was recorded in collaboration with The London Contemporary Orchestra (you know, the chaps who worked with those blokes in Radiohead???) and highlights cellist Oliver Coates (you know, the guy who ALSO worked with RADIOHEAD??!???!!??), who even helped Mulhern co-write the opener “Ganfuda.”

Reflections on a Dead Sea is an extended and highly improvised score to Gatt’s harrowing story about Libyan refugees detained en route to Italy and is based on some original piano improvisations that Mulhern banged out for the film. “We discovered the sound that fitted the film best was extremely soft articulations, played so they were barely audible,” said Mulhern about the process. “It opened up a fascinating sound world that I felt could go beyond the film.”

The barren, orchestral arrangements of Mulhern’s “fascinating sound world” follow a slew of soundtrack work from Mulhern (as well as his cohorts on the album) — so yeah; it’s pretty damn cinematic. And conveniently, it’ll also fit snugly into the <a href=”highly pre-orderable Bandcamp catalog of 1631 Records. Bloody brilliant! Snag a copy now on either vinyl or digital download, and check out the tracks “Libya” and “Libya (instrumental)” down below.

Reflections on a Dead Sea by Danny Mulhern

Reflections on a Dead Sea tracklisting:

01. Fosl 159824 at https://www.tinymixtapes.com Australian sound artist Ross Manning announces new album Reflex in Waves on Room40 2017-10-13T15:34:26-04:00 https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/australian-sound-artist-ross-manning-announces-new-album-reflex-waves-room40?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tmt Music
Here’s the rub: these days it seems like ya gotta think outside the box-of-thinking-outside-the-box just to get any solid thinking done at all. And with all the news of impending doom/significant creations to sort through — plus all those other decades/millenia of historical impending doom/significant creations to sort through — it can really be…a lot. Resourcefully, Australian multiartstrumentalist Ross Manning has a new album coming out on the avant-garde Room40 label to help teach us how to connect the dots between elements of perception and tactile ways to interpret the substratal forces existing in the “here” and “now.” Phew. Just in time!

Manning’s last album on the same label, Interlacing, was a real treat; progressing between spectral naval gazing and ominous tones as if the stars and our nightmares were equally accessible and mere inches apart. And his live performances are a confounding display of perceptibly, harnessing the power of found objects, “traditional” instruments, self-induced instruments, and visual elements that influence (and are influenced by) one other. Sometimes the installations are rigged like perpetual Rube Goldberg machines, and other times Manning acts as a sort of conductor and musician, responsively altering specific parts of the installation to intriguing results.

His latest audio document of this well-honed multidisciplinary approach is titled Reflex in Waves. It serves as a companion piece to his installation Dissonant Rhythms, which is currently on display at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane. IMA describes the visual element as “…a large-scale, self-playing instrument that resembles a wave form…” The album itself (sans any/all large-scale, self-playing instruments…unless you’re feeling especially ingenious?) will be available October 20 on vinyl and digital. In the mean time, (re)acquaint yourself with Manning’s dot-connecting, substratal forces-interpreting aesthetic via the clips below and pre-order
Reflex in Waves now on the label’s Bandcamp and website.

Reflex in Waves tracklisting:

01. After translating that album’s intimate melancholy into an electric (in multiple senses of the word) live show with this year’s appropriately titled Carrie & Lowell Live, Stevens has now announced The Greatest Gift.

A companion to the live album and album proper, The Greatest Gift is a mixtape, combining song remixes, alternate song versions, demos, and outtakes (like mixtapes do) into one “Available in Translucent Yellow” package. Remixes come courtesy of Helado Negro (Roberto C. Lange), Doveman (Thomas Bartlett), 900X (James McAlister, with whom Stevens collaborated on this year’s Planetarium), and Sufjan Stevens (Sufjan Stevens).

In addition to announcing The Greatest Gift, Stevens has also shared “Wallowa Lake Monster,” one of four Carrie & Lowell outtakes on the mixtape. Outtake or not, any time we can get a new near-seven minute Sufjan track, it’s worth it. It’s not quite there yet, but maybe one day this song can reside in the pantheon of actual lake monsters, right alongside Nessie from Loch Ness, Champ from Lake Champlain, and Big Blue from season three, episode 22 of The X-Files.

The Greatest Gift is out November 24 via Asthmatic Kitty and can be pre-ordered physically here and digitally here. A portion of the proceeds from the mixtape’s sale will benefit Cancer Support Community, the world’s largest professionally led nonprofit network of cancer support. Listen to “Wallowa Lake Monster,” and check out the cover, full tracklist, and a few choice fan reactions, all down below.

The Greatest Gift tracklisting:

01.
