(The heavy North American trio recently gave us a kick-ass taste of our own anxiety last year, via What One Becomes and is set to hit the road for some west coast dates in January).

The converged twain’s resultant collabor-album is entitled American Dollar Bill — Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look At Face On, and it comes out February 23 on Thrill Jockey. The album resulted from “a series of unrehearsed, completely non-premeditated sessions” that took place between Haino and SUMAC this past summer. And the anticipated level of intensity — what with Haino and staple of the American doom scene Aaron Turner possibly sharing vocal duties — is basically…UNFATHOMABLE.

Luckily, you can pre-order the release here and watch a handy album trailer down below…both of which should help a little with the intensity-fathoming:

American Dollar Bill — Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look At Face On tracklisting:

01. I sure do! (Even though dude died when I was three. (Boy, do I feel old!)) The world could use the legendary Nigerian composer and political activist’s visionary musical voice right about now. In addition to composing dinosaur-sized polyrhythmic funk tracks, the man had a rapier wit and experience tangling with absurd regimes — both of which help make his music a potent salve for, uh, all the SHIT that seems to be going on all the time.

Well, Fela might not be with us, but it’s great know that his offspring are out there plying their own takes on his groovemaster/gadfly dichotomy. IN FACT, Femi Kuti, the first of Fela’s kids to kick down the door to Afro-pop stardom, has a new album dropping VERY SOON…Ok, actually it’s not out ‘til next year — February 23, 2018. So PRETTY SOON. Panda Bear a.k.a. Noah Lennox has announced a new EP titled A Day With the Homies. The five-track release is out January 2018 and will be a vinyl-only release via Domino.

In a statement about the EP, Panda Bear speaks somewhat ambiguously about its creation and possible reception. “I hoped to make something without frills or much embellishment, principally because I’ve found more fluff tends to equal less power. Since the juiciest action is entirely focused in the deeper zones of the frequency spectrum (at least from where I’ve sat), power was key.” His full statement can be found below.

A Day With the Homies is out January 12. I appreciate your role as filter or translator, and by withholding my own blueprints for the album, I mean to encourage and cultivate your part in its trip.

The songs aren’t lyrically linear or narrative as such, though I did scatter pieces of longer-chewed themes across the tracks. I find they still work satisfactorily alone, but strengthen each other’s messages when combined.

I hoped to make something without frills or much embellishment, principally because I’ve found more fluff tends to equal less power. Since the juiciest action is entirely focused in the deeper zones of the frequency spectrum (at least from where I’ve sat), power was key.

It’s not often anymore I find something specific to my life that feels worthwhile setting to song for others to consume. It’s a tough sell convincing myself that my own troubles warrant as much attention as those we all share. The strokes of the messages themselves are broad enough, then, that I think anybody can find a familiar face, if they care to look.

The lion’s share of the noise is centered, or nearly, so both speakers get a taste. This is another nod towards power, but it also means HOMIES doesn’t work in the same way through headphones as it does out in the air.

My greatest hope with this stuff is for it to live like my favorite songs do, which is to say like comforts or companions. Thank you very much for listening and I hope A Day With the Homies can mean something to you.

Animal Collective Panda Bear Domino Tue, 21 Nov 2017 15:47:32 +0000 Mr P 160356 at https://www.tinymixtapes.com Etant Donnés and Michael Gira’s 1999 noise onslaught Offenbarung Und Untergang to be reissued on Munster Records 2017-11-21T11:14:08-05:00 https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/etant-donnes-and-michael-giras-offenbarung-und-untergang-be-reissued-munster-records?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tmt Music

The Legend of Georg Trakl: An Industrial Fairy Tale

Once upon a time in the faraway land of Austria, there lived a cocaine addict named Georg Trakl. Being the early years of the 20th century, emo hadn’t been invented yet, and goth was more than a half century off, so the young Trakl could only soothe his inner torment through his macabre writing (and lots of blow). His vivid imagery took on an especially nightmarish tone when he became stationed as a pharmacist during World War I, when our hero encountered many patients he couldn’t help. Deadening his anxieties with easy access to pharmaceuticals, the horrors of war still proved too much, and Trakl committed suicide by injecting himself with a lethal dose of cocaine within a year.

*

Not only is Trakl’s tale is a perfect transgressive storm (drug addiction, an intense visual writing style, and a possibly incestuous relationship with his sister, oh my!), but it’s ALSO possibly the best fodder EVER for an industrial concept record.

Enter: Offenbarung und Untergang — a 1999 collaboration between Étant Donnés, Swans-frontman Michael Gira, EBM artist Saba Komossa, and Mark Cunningham of the obscure art rock outfit Mars — which was anchored by the tragic narrative.

In case you’re not up to speed on the players: The Étant Donnés brothers are a hub of noise and industrial artists, having worked with a bevy of musicians like Alan Vega (Suicide), Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV), and Lydia Lunch (all-around badass). Those first few snowflakes are nice at first (the beauty of mother nature, blah, blah, blah), but it turns into nasty slush pretty damn quickly. The options: 1) spend months trudging through a frigid metropolis; skin dry, nose runny, jeans ruined, or 2) rack up the Uber bills. It’d be great if there was an escape hatch to a place flowing with strong caipirinhas and sweet, mellifluous electronic music vibes keeping winter’s brutality at bay.

Don’t despair! Aside from the array of eclectic musicians, the two-day fest raises the bar with its unique venue: the abandoned Playcenter amusement park located in the middle of the city. (Easily accessible via trains!)

That’s right: on March 3-4, 2018, dozens of of finest names in electronica — including chillwave mastermind Four Tet, brain rinsers Modeselektor, DJ stalwart Nina Kraviz, Detroit techno veterans Marcel Dettmann and Palms Trax, and the electrofunk grooves of Floating Points — will basically set up shop amid the ruins of Jurassic Park! Also joining the cabal is a host of local Brazilian acts to expand your musical horizons — including Marcos Valle, a Brazilian pop institution with almost five decades in the game.

Head here for tickets and more details, and keep scrolling for a list of confirmed acts and a few shots of the incredibly spooky, Scooby Doo-esque location. November 20: a.k.a. the day that Scherk drops his new masterwork of experimental ambient doodles and sampled sketches, a bubbling hot spring of electronic sound art that’s chock full of gentle melodies which burst as they reach the surface.

Released via London cassette label videogamemusic, Modelled’s textures and samples intermingle with and repeat themselves, creating patterns which can then be “molded,” “shaped,” “sculpted,” “developed,” and other-synonyms-for-“modelled” (that L!) by the mind to exhort maximum engagement. The psychological results of all this constant stimulation is an inspiring rush of creativity as the brain begins to fire on all cylinders. Like: I’m going to go write a book, or paint a picture, or jog for miles! (I’m NOT going to go blow up Parliament or do anything remotely Fawkesian! I should just drop that reference.)

You may recognize Scherk from 2015’s gorgeous self-released Catalogue: 1-12 and/or the Peaceful Protest comp released earlier this year on RVNG. Heck, you might even know him personally (from what I understand, he’s a really ace guy).

But regardless of whether you’re acquainted or not, you can order yourself a copy the cassette (each of which which includes a “unique silk-screened sleeve on super nice paper”) right here, and you can also check out the album track “In a state of love” below, which should give you a nice aural sense of how the burgeoning romantic feelings toward another human being can sometimes feel like fizzy Alka-Seltzer tablets and ocean currents converging inside your body.

Modelled by Jonathan William Scherk

Modelled tracklisting:

01. The proclaimed “underground house hero” returns to Superconscious Records this December 15 with a new double-dose of Ibiza-ready, 120 bpm bangers.

Already finding himself spun by the notorious Richard D. James, Fantastic Man looks to continue his hot streak with P.M.T.C., a new pair of tunes that will pluck you right out of your trodden winter misery and drop you off in a paradise of the summery Spanish coast. Can’t you just feel that warm summer breeze…

P.M.T.C. promises more of the bright, psychedelic dance nostalgia that made last year’s Rhythm Algorithm EP such a hit. Listening to its buoyant B-side, “Cool Waters” (which you can stream below), it’s easy to see why the Australian DJ’s chops carry such cred in the house world.

While it starts with a familiar yet beachy boom-bap pulse, the track’s halfway point loops in some vocal splices that shove the 7-minute track beyond pleasant into an enrapturing and toasty sonic world. Basically, if you’re looking for something to bring some summer to your winter DJ sets, this is the track for you.

Pre-orders are up now for the two-sided EP, so hop on those potatoes while they’re still hot and ready to party.

P.M.T.C. tracklisting:

01.
