DJ Food & DK Now, Listen, Again

[Ninja Tune; 2007]

Rating: 3.5/5

Styles: trip/hip-hop, jungle, funk
Others: DJ Kicks, Bonobo, DJ Vadim, Mr. Scruff

DJ Food is just about as old school as you can get for Ninja Tune. Obviously, it has a lot to do with the fact that Zen founders Matt Black and Jonathan More -- who also record as the legendary Coldcut -- often constitute the majority of Food. Following up their first installment in the Solid Steel compilation series some six years after the fact, the decade's worth of combined deejaying experience between Coldcut and touring member DK means the quality of mixing is never in question. It’s the track selection that will turn off some people. Don’t worry, though, most of thems be fun-haters. I mean, who doesn’t want to hear Ram Jam’s “Black Betty” next to cuts from Aphex Twin, DJ Zinc, New Order, DJ Shadow, and Roots Manuva? I suppose the fast-paced, drastic changes between old school/underground hip-hop, electronica, soul, rock, and drum & bass, among others, is a bit much for some to handle. Well, hooey for them, I say. I’ve got a five-second attention span, so this shit is off the hook. What’s next? Tell me about the fucking golf shoes!
