I won’t get too personal here — no one needs that — but the release date for Chasms next tour de force happens to fall on a very important day for me. We all have mixed feelings on eventful dates. Even triumphant ones tend to arouse past pains. For the (now) LA-based duo of Jess Labrador and Shannon Madden, February 22 brings a new album and — like me — old reminiscences of people loved and lives lost.

We have just recently passed the second anniversary of the heartbreaking Ghost Ship warehouse fire that took the lives of 36 people, including close Chasms friends and Madden’s 23-year-old brother, Griffin. Life is difficult, but it is how you deal with the difficulties that define your life moving forward. For Chasms, dealing meant facing the aftermath of that horrific event, as well as navigating a marriage dissolution and a band relocation from San Francisco to Los Angeles. For Chasms fans, it means embracing a compelling new sound which leans heavily on the duo’s hug of dreamy dub.

Chasms will issue The Mirage on February 22, through Felte Records. The album is available on CD, DL, LP, and limited CS here. Check out opening track “Shadow” below and gaze further than that at The Mirage’s tracklisting and two January tour dates, in home bases new and old.
