“People are constantly asking me to write musicals — it’s the cross that I bear,” said Colin Meloy, lead singer of the Decemberists, confirming shocking suspicions that there are people who would enjoy a Colin Meloy-written musical.
It’s being reported by the types of people who report things that The Decemberists are in talks with Michael Mayer, the director of Green Day’s American Idiot musical, with the obvious goal of bringing The Decemberists’ music to life as a fully-staged musical (which will surely be known as Overly Educated American Idiot) being the prime topic of conversation. “We’re still talking (in the band), and there’s potential for a musical down the line, for sure,” said Meloy.
Colin Meloy and The Decemberists have always been known for writing theatrical music and it seems as if their tunes may soon be hitting theater stages — not just the fancy-schmancy theaters that they usually play at but at the type of theater stages that musicals are performed at.
