I have a confession to make: up until about a minute ago, I was seriously feeling SO SICK AND TIRED of making Twin Peaks jokes on TMT. I mean: it’s been a solid year since the damn show came soaring back into our lives like a spooky-ass screech owl swooping down from a Glastonbury Grove sycamore tree, and I basically haven’t been able to keep my damn mouth shut about it since. Frankly, I was running out of steam faster than a closed-down lumber mill. :-(
BUT then! Like a mysterious note in the mail from a demented Windom Earl, I get the word that Johnny Jewel — the man responsible for the show’s ubiquitous “Windswept” theme, as well as some of the more memorable Roadhouse jams with Chromatics (who, by the way, are releasing a new album later this year) — has just surprised and delighted Twin Peaks fans around the world by dropping a new album full of Twin Peaks music from the cutting room floor!
The album, titled Themes For Television and OUT RIGHT NOW via Italians Do It Better, consists of 21 tracks culled from the “monumental six hours of material” that Jewel reportedly obsessively cranked-out for the show, which were then handily sequenced and edited down into a “nearly hour-long foray into the blurry hours of night” (proving once and for all that there’s ALWAYS music in the air).
“The project began as a sonic exploration of the sounds I was hearing in my nightmares,” he explains. “I wanted to find my way out of the maze by focusing on beauty over fear — like the way the fractured sunrise looks in a dream.”
