“You can take the man out of the house, but you can’t take the house out of the man,” said a theoretical someone who was verging on building a political movement out of being a hermit. But in the context of (deep) house pioneer Larry Heard, that statement serves as a legitimate commentary on the now Memphis-based producer’s genre dedication going all the way back to when he released — as Mr. Fingers — a veritable litany of influential tracks in the late 80s and early 90s.
Heard’s solo endeavors under the moniker were supplemented by his simultaneous participation in the group named for him, Fingers Inc., where he was content to hang out in the background while vocalists Ron Wilson and Robert Owens crooned-on eternally about how they weren’t “lonely anymore,” and how the “mystery of love” was like that impulse to disrupt and go streaking in the middle of highly-televised sporting events. (Wait…no? Just me??)
Aaaanyway: Heard had ceased his efforts under Mr. Fingers roughly 25 years ago in favor of releasing music under his own name. The 2016 Outer Acid EP marked the first significant revival of the pseudonym since back in the day. And naturally, that EP is now being succeeded by a just-announced LP called Cerebral Hemispheres, out April 13 on Heard’s label, Alleviated Records. Not only is it the first Mr. Fingers album in 25 years, but it’s also the first Heard album since 2005, which was a few years prior to when he started noticing troubles hearing higher frequencies.
