We all remember those great days of 1989 when The Cure released Disintegration and you started putting “Pictures of You” and “Love Song” on every mixtape you made, no matter who the girl/boy was or if it even seemed like she/he listened to The Cure. Those days are back again, as The Cure have announced that they will be re-releasing Disintegration as a deluxe, three-disc, remastered motherlode of gothy dirges and surprisingly-sweet pop ballads.
The new edition features plenty of extras, demos, unreleased tracks, and a 20-page booklet with previously unseen photos, art, lyrics, and an “in-depth overview of the period by The Cure’s founder, Robert Smith” (whatever that means). The first disc contains the 12 songs that make up the original album and was remastered with the supervision of Smith himself. The second disc contains 20 unreleased songs, gathered by Smith, and includes demos and rehearsals that cover the evolution of the album from conception to final product; making the cut are instrumental versions of “Pictures of You,” “Prayers for Rain,” and “Fascination Street,” as well as unreleased songs “Noheart,” “Esten,” “Delirious Night,” and a cover of Judy Collins’ “Pirate Ships.”
The third and final disc is a remixed version of the 1991 live album Entreat, which captured the band on their 1989 worldwide Prayer Tour show at Wembley Arena and has, up to this point, been pretty tough to get. The live disc also sees the inclusion of four “missing” tracks that have been added so that the entire show is recast as a live version of Disintegration.
