Marnie Stern plans hella — I mean a lot of — new shows after playing briefly with The Flaming Lips

In June, Stereogum posted a baker’s dozen list of Wayne Coyne’s favorite albums (via The Quietus), which included snooze-alerts like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jefferson Airplane, but also Marnie Stern’s sophomore album from 2008, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That (TMT Review) — a good album, but not exactly what I expected to follow The Who’s Live at Leeds.

Soon after news of Coyne’s disturbingly normal music taste, I got word that Stern appeared as the sole opener for The Flaming Lips’ L.A. shows at Hollywood Forever Cemetery this June. As many people — particularly those living in Chicago — know, on July 7 and 8, Marnie Stern officially opened for The Flaming Lips at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, cementing their professional relationship and perhaps explaining Marnie Stern’s being on Coyne’s mind.

There are no more dates with The Flaming Lips planned for the remainder of the summer, but this September, Marnie Stern is leaving for a big tour of North America with No Joy, concluding the tour alone in Australia when our fall becomes their spring.
