Sub Pop signs Seattle rap dude Porter Ray, who just dropped a new mixtape

Sub Pop, hitherto known as the label that stood behind the grunge explosion, have well and truly shaken off their metaphorical cardigans now with the recent signing of another Seattle-based avant-rap artist, Porter Ray. This, along with Shabazz Palaces’ recently dropped and heavily rated new album (plus a New York Times article to boot), the label may be on the brink of ushering in a space rap renaissance from Seattle.

Porter Ray is the first signing that Sub Pop’s new A+R man Ishmael Butler (a.k.a. Palaceer Lazaro from Shabazz Palaces) has brought to the label, and a quick listen to the current single “Jewelry” will disperse any doubts as to Porter Ray’s skills and spacey hip-hop credentials.

“Jewelry” is also featured on the brand-spanking-new mixtape that Porter Ray recently dropped on his Bandcamp as a prelude to the album Sub Pop are suggesting will be ready by 2015.
