Whoever said “youth is wasted on the young” was obviously spending too much time sitting around whistling, whittling, and working out their quotation-creation muscles in the Great Depression. In the great impression known as Portugal, youth wastes its time doing dynamic musical things where everything is happening at once. Construction and deconstruction, serious endeavor and farce; it’s all there in the Portuguese batidas and tarraxos by scads of city crews, including Príncipe Discos’ young Rio de Mouro collective RS Produções.

After superb releases this year by P. Adrix, DJ Lilocox, and Niagara, Príncipe will end 2018 by issuing RS Produções’ Bagdad Style this Friday, November 16. RS (“Rinchoa Stress”) is helmed by the sickeningly young DJ Narciso, who crafted the EP with core DJ and producer Nuno Beats and the rest of the metal beat troop: DJs Nulo and Lima, producer Farucox, and MC Pimenta. The EP is RS’ first for the Lisbon-based label, although it has wowed crowds previously at Príncipe’s Musicbox residencies.

The 8-track, 12-inch EP is housed in a hand-painted, unmistakably Márcio Matos design and is available here. Check out the dynamite “Hino RS” below. As they say in Lisbon and beyond: the crianças are alright.
