Red Horse (Eli Keszler & Steve Pyne) release new album Red Horse on Type, not to be confused with Red Horse or Red Horse

Allow me to clarify right up front: this Red Horse is the experimental/noise outfit of drummer and percussionist Eli Keszler and guitarist Steve Pyne. And this isn’t a re-release of their first record from 2009, Red Horse, but rather an entirely new release, which happens to carry an identical name. Coincidentally, there’s also a folk trio named Red Horse, who also released an album, Red Horse, in 2010. I’m not sure what the fascination is with the color red or horses, but I’m guessing there’s probably room to mix things up a bit. “Fuchsia Pony” has yet to be assumed, for instance.

In any case, looking beyond all of the confusion about horses and what color they are, there’s something genuinely worth being excited about here if you’re drawn toward improvisational music. On Red Horse, both Pyne and Keszler utilize an array of homemade and self-altered instruments to create mechanical soundscapes, which appear to mimic what a factory would sound like in your nightmares — only more frenetic and cacophonic. Sampling a few of the tracks, I can’t say that it’s quite like anything I’ve heard before, which is always a good thing, considering the genre.
