Before, it was reasonable to think that the only bowling-over associated with Street Fighter II music happened in those YouTube videos satirizing especially ridiculous forms of Christianity (see below), but now the folks at the Japan-based Brave Wave Productions are taking it upon themselves to hit us with their very best pressed Hadouken. They describe themselves as an outfit “dedicated to exploring the interplay between video games, music and nostalgia,” and following an April pressing that reportedly sold out about as fast as Chun-Li’s lightning kick, a new box set (also) containing the score for Street Fighter II has just been announced for (again) limited release some time in November.
Pre-orders are available here, and Discogs scavengers should obviously be relieved at the more palatable price tag. $160 for some LP chiptunes? C’mon.
Of course, anyone who’s familiar with the compositions from Yoko Shimomura, Isao Abe, and Syun Nishigaki knows that they aren’t just chiptunes, and supplementing those catchy sounds of nostalgia epitomized are liner notes from Shimomura, who was originally on hand to approve the CPS-1 and CPS-2 arcade extractions of audio that directly led to the remastered release in question, Street Fighter II - The Definitive Soundtrack. Oh, to be young again and not yet wondering if Brazilians were offended by sponsoring the only mutant character.
The colors and artwork seem pretty stunning, by the way.
