Sufjan Stevens jetés into the news, announces first-ever release of his The Decalogue score
Because no one wants to look at Sufjan Stevens, here's pianist Timo Andres (photo: Michael Wilson)

Sufjan Stevens loves to write and release music centered on grand concepts. Entire albums inspired by states, Christmas box sets, a “programmatic tone poem” dedicated to a freeway no one likes, and that’s just a small sampling.

Stevens has also collaborated five times with Justin Peck, Resident Choreographer at the New York City Ballet, for as we all know, ballet is the most grand of all the dance concepts. On October 18, Stevens will be releasing the score to one of those collaborations, The Decalogue, via his own Asthmatic Kitty Records.

The release of The Decalogue will mark the first time that the score has been released to the public, previously reserved for the real heads who took in a night at the ballet in 2017. It is performed by pianist Timo Andres, who has written major works for the Boston Symphony, Carnegie Hall, the Barbican, and more. Andres also performs regularly with Gabriel Kahane and has frequently appeared with the likes of Philip Glass, Becca Stevens, and also more. Basically, this Andres cat knows what they’re doing.

Hear proof by listening to “III” the — surprise — third track off of The Decalogue down below, where you can also check out the score’s very straight-forward tracklisting. The Decalogue is out October 18 via Asthmatic Kitty Recordings and can be pre-ordered here.
