In early June, we reported on Superchunk’s sort-of return to rock by announcing the release date of their forthcoming album, Majesty Shredding (first since 2001), and their guest spot on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon come September. (Note: before we resign Superchunk to the “old but not dead yet” category, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the fact that they covered Destiny’s Child on the 2007 Guilt by Association comp; would old fogeys do that?) Now we even have news that actually concerns this summer: Superchunk will release the 7-inch “Digging for Something” b/w “February Punk” on July 13!
Only 1,000 copies will be made, hand-numbered on multi-colored vinyl. There are about 309,573,000 people living in the U.S., and I think it’s a safe bet to say that about 45% of them are Superchunk fans (too high? Maybe you don’t give Americans enough credit). So if you don’t manage to be one of those lucky 1,000 (or if you don’t want to wait for July to hear Side A), you can stream “Digging for Something” here. B-side “February Punk” will not be included on Majesty Shredding, but “Digging for Something” — with vocals from John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats — is the first track off the new album. To further make the single super indie, Harrison Haynes (Les Savy Fav) contributed the cover art, which is cool. Might have been cooler if the forest silhouette was Alfred Hitchcock though, instead of just hinting at a form.
Superchunk have added a few more tourdates on top of the ones listed in our Majesty Shredding heads-up (hell, here’s the link one more time), but somehow I feel like these guys still aren’t partying to their full 1990s-Chapel Hill potential.
