Tori Kudo (Maher Shalal Hash Baz) & Kayo Makino get weird with the piano, prep Ein Traum Für Dich LP for Black Truffle

New from Oren Ambarchi’s Black Truffle Records: an answer to the rarely asked question of what happens when an unwavering enthusiast of French composer Erik Satie joins forces with an experimental DJ who’s not not fond (as far as we know) of wilderness excursions and the natural choruses that accompany them.

The mention of “wilderness excursions” is probably a hint not to expect anything in the realm of the sound collages that TMT has an everlasting appreciation for, but just in case things still aren’t clear: Japanese artists Tori Kudo and Kayo Makino recently collaborated for an LP that’s both a “genuine head-scratcher,” according to official press on the subject, AND a pretty meditative listen, according to people who’ve brazenly claimed to be experts on these sorts of things (a.k.a. just me). Their release Ein Traum Für Dich is out August 2.

Kayo Makino’s got a not-so-enlightening SoundCloud page that you can check out; and as far as Kudo goes, you may be familiar with his work as the conductor and principal figure in Maher Shalal Hash Baz, a Japanese ensemble that’s historically been inclined toward short chamber pop or folk tracks. On Ein Traum Für Dich, Kudo’s piano-playing is arranged and accompanied by edits/sample inserts from Makino, and the result is, oh, you know…experimental (maybe in the somewhat hallucinatory sense of the word).

Makino has uploaded an early version of the A side, which you can listen to below. Look here if you want to buy the LP (which was mixed and mastered by Jim O’Rourke, btw).
