Trevor Powers might be great at naming things, or he might be terrible at naming things. Exhibit A: Mulberry Violence, which is the name of the new album Powers just announced. Is that a great album title or a terrible one? I just don’t know. I’m convinced it’s one of the two, though. It is decidedly NOT a mediocre title.
Either way: Mulberry Violence is out August 17 on Powers’ own Baby Halo label.
But wait — now, let’s take a closer look at Exhibit B, that label name: “Baby Halo.” Hmm…the conundrum deepens.
Moving on: Powers (you may be aware) was once known by the very solid band-sounding moniker Youth Lagoon, under which he dropped three albums; but he has since retired that name upon apparently realizing that, hey, “Trevor Powers” is already a pretty fucking cool stage name as-is. Dude’s parents were clearly good at naming things…so maybe it’s in the blood and, by default, he is too?
But there’s one thing we have yet to evaluate, and that’s the titles of the Mulberry Violence tracks Powers has released. The full album tracklist “has yet to be revealed,” but so far, there’s “Playwright” — which I’d say is firmly middle of the road — and then there’s the two (!) brand-new (!) tracks: “Ache” and “Painted Saint.”
“Ache,” I would say, is kind of a non-title, nothing much to it. It’s just a word. “Painted Saint,” though: that sounds pretty cool. I am intrigued.
Overall, I guess I feel pretty comfortable saying Powers is mostly great at naming things. Is he a great musician? I leave that up to you to decide, once you listen to both new tracks below.
