If you dug Whitney’s very pleasant folk-rocking debut, Light Upon the Lake, but have always wondered what it would have sounded like if it were more of a lo-fi record — boy, have we got news for you! The Chicago duo has just announced the impending release of Light Upon the Lake: Demo Recordings, out November 10 on Secretly Canadian.
The collection will feature the demos from which Light Upon the Lake was birthed, as well as a cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” and a previously-unreleased song (though also appearing here in demo-form) called “You and Me,” which you can listen to down below.
Like all great demo collections, Light Upon the Lake: Demo Recordings offers bandmates Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek to give their fans a more intimate, unvarnished picture of their creative process in all of its on-the-fly, magic-bottling glory by whisking listeners back to the winter morning songwriting sessions upon which the whole project was initially founded. Oh — and (conveniently!) it’ll also give the duo a nice little piece of product to hawk during the next leg of their US tour, which begins TONIGHT (October 3) in Birmingham.
Either way, the release of Light Upon the Lake: Demo Recordings offers the perfect opportunity to dust off this old, overlooked gem of an album and re-evaluate its significance.
