A few weeks ago, the aptly named net-label Escape From Nature released Club By Michael, by Michael. The first capsule collection in what will probably be an extensive array of men’s grooming products and packable rain shells was a four track EP; a little more abrasive, a little more refined than an average club. Samples and sounds were arranged side by side, rather than linearly, democratizing the listening process and giving less in-tune ears a chance to discern the… wait, was that just Michael Jackson?
Anyways, this technique has proliferated since R Plus 7 came out, and it’s nice to have a remix available that can splice the relevant pieces together. This one by Air Max ‘97 streamlines the narrative a bit; omitting some of Michael’s more ostentatious pop-culture references in favor of 97’s factory rhythms and limited palette. But now you have two versions of “Club (Improptu) ,” one for buying your handbag dog a hoodie with headphones in the drawstrings and a voice box that translates its tail waggings into emojis, the other for crushing miles at the local gym. See what I did there? Eclecticism vs. focus.
