♫♪  Tabs Out: Laser Focus #10 - Joe Bastardo

Tabs Out is an all-cassette podcast that’s been documenting the prolific tape underground with joyful obsession and humorous expertise since 2012. Tiny Mix Tapes has teamed with Tabs Out for a show called Laser Focus, in which tape aficionados/fetishists Mike Haley, Dave Doyen, and Joe B hone in on a specific label or artist. Check out the archive here.

“I’ve known Joe since high school, so the majority of my adult life. When all my friends shocked me and went off to either became alcoholics or architects (that’s a figure of speech), Joe was one of the few who, like me, decided to keep on making art. We’ve been supporting each other since the beginning, when he was a singer in a funk band and I was playing comedic digital hardcore, watching each other perform and pushing one another’s creative energies. With each new album he makes, I can hear him pursuing a whole new idea, always with meticulous precision, never relying solely on the power of his synthesizer; he creates music as engrossing as his graphic design. Joe has a fully realized vision that he’s pursuing in his work, and that’s a quality I’ll always tip my hat to.” – Sam Gas Can

In addition to running the Moss Archive label, Joe Bastardo creates sonic offerings alone and with pals as Bastian Void, Homeowner, Looks Realistic, and others. He’s currently on tour with Sam Gas Can. For this hour-long episode, Bastardo talked to us about about synths, The Goonies, and, of course, tapes

Jams come from these tapes:

- Gay Shapes s/t (Moss Archive)
- Bastian Void - “Phonics” (Chemical Tapes)
- Homeowner - “New England Acoustics” (Metaphysical Circuits)
- Looks Realistic - “Where Does It Come From?” (Constellation Tatsu)
- Joe Bastardo & Howard Stelzer - “At Ease” (905 Tapes)
