Diplo FabricLive 24

Diplo proved he could produce for himself with last year's superb DJ Shadow-like trip-hop treat Florida, while also providing a base for M.I.A.'s debut album. But well before that, Wes Pentz was busy earning his name and reputation by spinning parties and releasing a series of mixes that reflected his Miami upbringing. This dude can definitely spin records, make no mistake there. I've never heard Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" mixed into or out of anything so seamlessly before, and The Cure's "Love Song" melded into Outkast's "B.O.B." here is nothing short of spectacular. But the overall track selection leaves much to be desired; it's about half and half timelessly wicked and utterly lame. Most of the cheesy old-school electro tracks and sounds don't seem to have aged well. So the whole thing feels like you're listening to a mix tape made for someone you've never met. You'll prolly want to download 24 and compare it to any 2 Many DJs Soulwax mix first before you think about buying it.
