The freak-folk tag isn't grimy enough to describe the bro-fi recordings of OCS; let's use kitchen-core-fuck-folk (the fuck thrown in there to get your attention, you backwoods perv!). The brainchild of former Pink & Brown-er John Dwyer and a buddy, Patrick Mullins, OCS create the aural equivalent of an acoustic show in a large cooking den, complete with the uncanny clink of pots 'n' pans, the rattle of salt shakers, the drip-drip of a leaky faucet and the rollicking scrape of a dough mixer set in slow motion. Draped over these elements are lightly picked country-blues guitar phrases and Dwyer's nasal throat groans that might just annoy the pants off the general population.
Through this wildly random experiment in old-timey, folk-y subject matter, we hear Dwyer exercise demons none of us thought existed considering the cacophonous crowing of his still-running Coachwhips project. On 3 & 4, we ride his coattails through a milieu of one-off brilliance, Dwyer's every whim somehow congealing into the sort of recording that couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't have turned out any other way, despite several shortcomings and an overly artsy milieu.
Many of 3 & 4's offerings are directionless, meandering guitar lines that boil over Animal Collective's more pointless moments on Sung Tongs in a fiery vat of seething electric abandon. What will tickle those tucked away in the avant garde persuasion is the sweltering deluge of noisy effects that creak and sparkle like a cut power line twisting in the gales of a howling hurricane. An acquired taste to be sure, 3 & 4 is the second blasting point for a project that will leave some clamoring for the twang of Dwyer's main 'Whip, others hoping he'll put down the megaphone for good.
