Arcade Fire win Polaris Prize, Twitter satisfied by Drake's tears

Recently, in the Twitterverse, a trending topic appeared in the form of #DrakeCriesWhen. Clearly, the trend was aimed at Toronto’s first big hip-hop superstar, following in the footsteps of his alternative rock brethren Our Lady Peace (remember those guys?) in having appeal south of the Canadian border. Why was Drake crying then? Who knows? Last time I paid attention to a hip-hop star’s emotions was when Lauryn Hill had another diva moment several years ago (sorry, Ms. Hill, but you’re not cool by trying be Jeff Mangum. Even he got out of his hermitage, and look at how popular he is!).

Now, Drake has an actual reason to cry. You see, he gained a protégé in the form of the mysterious The Weeknd. He wanted to gain the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, Canada’s national music award for artistic merit, but he knew that his American-tinged hip-hop would not hold water in the Canadian critical echo chamber, whereas The Weeknd, with his added elements of chillwave and downtempo, girded the loins of the critics. So he kept him at bay, taught him some tricks, even helped him butter up the Polaris jurist by having him release the mixtape Thursday during the shortlist period. All so that he can live vicariously for those 30,000 loonies (worth more than American dollars), and show that he is an influential figure in the Toronto music scene.

But all that came for naught. For the momentum that carried The Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs to victory at the Grammys and the Junos and the BRITs continued at the Masonic Temple Hall in Toronto last night, where they won the Polaris. They bested not only The Weeknd, but 2009 winners Fucked Up, fellow band member (and TMT fave) Colin Stetson, and others such as TMT hero Destroyer, as well as newcomers Timber Timbre and BRAIDS.

So, drink up, Twitterers. Drake’s tears are yours for the taking.

WHY? cancels remainder of US tour, fans cry out “WHY?”

While an exact confirmation of why WHY?’s tour is being cancelled has yet to be issued by the band, the stream of Facebook comments related to the cancellation announcement imply that band member Yoni Wolf has injured his hand and will require surgery.

At this juncture, the band is only speculating about the possibility of making it to the last venue on the US schedule, a stop at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Refunds are being issued for all shows prior to the October 15 Chicago engagement, and the subsequent European tour starting on October 20 is still a go.

TMT wishes Yoni a speedy and full recovery.

The Stooges reschedule California dates after Iggy Pop breaks his foot… the Godfather of Softness?

Due an injury sustained by front man Iggy Pop, seminal Detroit garage/punk band The Stooges have postponed their West Coast tourdates to early December. Pop is well-known for his stage antics over the years, but it wasn’t the usual rolling in glass or forced vomiting that put him out of commission this time; it was clumsiness. Pop broke his foot during a concert in Romania on August 27 after tripping over a microphone stand. On the advice of his doctor, he is currently resting for 6-8 weeks at his home in the Caymen Islands. This isn’t the first sign the 64-year-old lizard has shown of slowing down in his old age, as just last year he announced his retirement from stage diving.

However, if nothing else, Pop’s attitude toward the situation remains pretty punk rock: “I hate this, I hate like hell to cancel or postpone anything. I only saw the doctor because it hurt so fucking much and I couldn’t fix it myself. Please be patient, I am so excited about these dates on the left coast.” The new tourdates are listed below and refunds are available for original ticket holders.

Tourdates:

12.01.11 - Los Angeles, CA - The Palladium *
12.04.11 - San Francisco, CA - The Warfield *
12.06.11 - San Francisco, CA - The Warfield *

Panda Bear and Sonic Boom feast on flesh of the living, flesh out their upcoming tour

Boy, if there’s one thing I wasn’t expecting from this life, it was for Panda Bear to be a zombie. But, hey, here I am, screaming out in pain while the man legally known as Noah Lennox gnaws away the remaining meat on my left arm. Guess I won’t need pills anymore, eh? Unless they make a pill that cures being dead. Because, you know, that’s what I’m about to be. Dead.

At the very least, I can use these last moments of life to make Panda Bear look like kind of a jerk. So here goes: Panda Bear has added more dates to his upcoming world tour. Accompanying him on these shows will be Sonic Boom, the former Spacemen 3 member who co-produced Panda Bear’s latest record, Tomboy (TMT Review). Shucks, I almost forgot: Sonic Boom, also a zombie. He is currently devouring my left leg.

If you are among the living, you can purchase a deluxe edition of Tomboy, on October 31 if you reside in Europe, or November 1 if you reside in North America. What makes it so deluxe and special is the fact that it’s a four-disc vinyl version with a bunch of instrumentals and single mixes and a capella versions. That will come out through Paw Tracks. Anyway, Panda Bear, you’re welcome. You can thank me by feasting on my sweet, sweet gallbladder.

Panda Bear dates:

09.23.11 - Philadelphia, PA - Popped Fest
09.25.11 - Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl (with TV on the Radio, Arctic Monkeys, Warpaint, Smith Westerns)
09.27.11 - Dallas, TX - Granada
09.29.11 - Chicago, IL - The Vic
10.01.11 - New York, NY - Webster Hall
10.02.11 - Brooklyn, NY - Masonic Temple
11.27.11 - Utrecht, Netherlands - Le Guess Who Festival
11.28.11 - Brussels, Belgium - Le Botanique
11.29.11 - Paris, France - La Gaite Lyrique
11.30.11 - Lille, France - TBA
12.01.11 - London, UK - Electric Ballroom

Jonny Greenwood and Krzysztof Penderecki working on new LP together while Thom Yorke twiddles thumbs in corner; Radiohead to play NYC

Meeting people is easy, at least for Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Thom is just so shy! It was recently announced that Greenwood and Aphex Twin would collaboratively perform numerous compositions by Krzysztof Penderecki at Poland’s Sacrum Profanum festival, and now news has arrived from Sacrum Profanum that Greenwood is set for another collaboration with the actual Penderecki himself, who is a noted major influence on Greenwood’s own compositions (most directly in Greenwood’s score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood).

The pair recently recorded a few sessions together at the Alvernia Studios in Krakow, Poland. According to Sacrum Profanum’s website, the recordings are to be released on Nonesuch Records at a presently undetermined date. The record will contain compositions by Penderecki and Greenwood that resounded at the concert crowning Wroclaw’s European Culture Congress.

In other hot Radiohead gossip, Thom Yorke has had enough inspirational chats with Michael Stipe to conjure up the energy and will to go to work like all the rest of us have to every day. So now, in addition to their performances on SNL and The Colbert Report, the band has just announced a pair of shows at the Roseland Ballroom for September 28 and 29, with Four Tet, FaltyDL, Pearson Sound, and RocketNumberNine opening both shows. According to an issued press release, tickets will go on sale at 10 AM ET on September 26 via Ticketmaster.

In an unofficial statement, Yorke was said to discourage fans from attending because there are slave children dying in the third world and the sun will soon destroy us all.

Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid’s final concert gets November release; give thanks!

On November 14, Norway’s Smalltown Superjazzz label will release Live at the South Bank, the final concert and collaborative album from Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) and jazz drummer and percussionist Steve Reid. The 2xCD/LP release is believed to be Reid’s last authorized recording before his untimely death back in 2010.

The performance in question took place in the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s Southbank Centre on June 20, 2009, as part of the Meltdown festival curated by multi-instrumentalist and free jazz legend Ornette Coleman. Accompanying Hebden and Reid for this particular concert was Swedish “power saxophonist” Mats Gustaffson, who has previously worked with such influential acts as Sonic Youth and Jim O’Rourke. Likewise, Reid himself had worked with numerous musicians who, to be sure, need no introduction, but a few of whom I’ll mention anyway: Miles Davis, James Brown, Freddie Hubbard, and Sun Ra. Needless to say, the curricula vitarum of each of the artists on this recording is astoundingly impressive.

In an article from JazzTimes, the author remarks on how Reid used to refer to Hebden as his “musical soul mate.” It would be fair, then, to consider this fifth and final recording between the two to be a tribute to Reid, and what ended up being a providential confluence of two innovative musical figures.

Live at the South Bank tracklisting:

Disc 1:
01. Morning Prayer
02. Lyman Place
03. People Be Happy

Disc 2:
01. Untitled
02. 25th Street
03. The Sun Never Sets
