Joke 01: Dude, I haven’t heard any new Bon Iver shit since like FOREVER AGO!

Copy 01: Following the out-of-nowhere success of 2008’s For Emma, Forever Ago (TMT Review) and 2009’s Blood Bank EP (TMT Review), Justin Vernon has kept plenty busy doing anything but releasing a Bon Iver follow-up. He’s jammed with Kanye, played with some high-school kids, launched Volcano Choir, toured with Gayngs, and hung out at some St. Vincent shows.

Joke 02-a: Vernon musta heard the new Fleet Foxes record and remembered that he had to get his folky ass in gear in time for festival season, AM I RIGHT? Hi-yo!

Copy 02-a: Finally, Vernon has confirmed a June 21 release of his new full-length album on Jagjaguwar.

Joke 02-b: The new album’s called Bon Ivver.

Copy 02-b: The new album’s called Bon Iver, Bon Iver.

Joke 03: The question on everyone’s lips now is, “exactly how chillwave is this thing gonna be?”

Copy 03: Featuring 10 new tracks, the new album sees Vernon and his companions broadening their sonic palette beyond the stark acoustic folk of For Emma into what his press release refers to as “a lush landscape of silky electric guitars, beautifully intricate keys, and subtle horn and string sections […] and densely layered vocals.” It was recorded and mixed in painstaking pieces over the past three years by Vernon and his collaborators at his own April Base Studios in Fall Creek, WI.

Joke 04: Rumor has it that Kanye West spits some HUGE verses all over this record!

Copy 04: That Colin Stetson guy plays his big saxophone on this record.

The Village Voice really wants you to hang out with them over the summer at their new music festival provided you wear a bathing suit

The Village Voice already has one music festival — Siren Music Festival at Coney Island — that they’ve been successfully putting together for 10 years; now that they’ve got a handle on how to make a fest work, they’ve announced the inaugural edition of their new extravaganza: 4 Knots.

“We’re extremely excited about the launch of the 4 Knots Music Festival this summer,” says Village Voice mouthpiece Josh Fromson. “Music fans from all five boroughs and all over the world have circled the date of our summer music event on their calendars each year.”

Mr. Fromson also added that he hopes all of his friends will be coming and that he doesn’t think it’s silly to assume everyone is already making plans to attend because: “We’re the Village fucking Voice, no one in the world is stupid enough to not come, and anyone who doesn’t is really a loser and a prick.”*

Named after the speed of New York’s legendary East River (and not after a tricky Boy Scout challenge as I assumed), the new festival takes place July 16 at the South Side Seaport. While a lineup of bands has yet to be reported (but you can bet we will when it becomes available), I can tell you that the one-day event is totally free, all-ages, held rain or shine, and will be sponsored by every sorority girl’s favorite beer, Bud Light, so expect to see plenty of drunk people going home with strangers.

Animal Collective announce US dates, including a performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion

Having just completed a short trip to California that culminated with a performance at Coachella, Animal Collective are heading to Europe next month on a tour that kicks off with their very own All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. Many people believed it to be Animal Collective’s last tour (not really), and no one really knew if they’d ever return to the stage (not true), but it’s just been announced that the group will be playing several shows leading up to their performance at the Pitchfork Music Festival. In fact, one of the shows will be at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, which seems to be a venue named after the group’s MPP album. I can’t be bothered to fact check (I’m not paid by the hour), but just assume this information is true and spread the word.

And hey, bonus: expect the full lineup of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin at the shows.

Mark Fell to release new LP on Editions Mego, will again sound like robot squirrels chattering away in a dusty static-storm

Erik Wiegand, who we as music snobs know as Errorsmith, works for a fancy little company called Native Instruments making synthesizers for music geeks who spend more time touching circuits than vaginas. One day, Wiegand needed some presets for a new software synthesizer and he asked Mark Fell to make him some.

Long story short: Fell came up with 40 sounds, gave ‘em to Wiegand, and they were ultimately rejected by Native Instruments. So Fell “decided to rework his UL8 project by extending the pattern generating systems used in its construction, which he then connected to the sounds produced in Erik’s synthesizer,” and while that sentence makes my brain hurt, I know that it means that Fell combined a couple projects (including his 40 sounds from earlier) and turned them into his new Manitutshu double 12-inch.

The new single, which sounds like thousands of electric ants exploding at the same time, is set for a May 27 release, comes with a poster, and features a remix from Mat Steel. If you’re curious to know what it sounds like inside of an android’s brain while it has sex, then preorder the record here and check out a track here.

Manitutshu tracklisting:

A1. Acids in the… thin razor, attack noise hat, Linn
A2. Acids in the… primes version
A3. Manitutshu (A New Algorithm)… LatelyBass and NewElectro, attack pulse hat
B1. Acids in the… razor experiment

C3. Materialisation epic razor chord and LatelyBass version with found voice

Brian Eno to release Drums Between the Bells on Warp, will likely be epic

On July 5, Brian Eno will release a new album titled Drums Between the Bells on Warp. The album, Eno’s second for Warp (the first being Small Craft on a Milk Sea), is a long-in-the-making collaboration between Eno and poet Rick Holland, who provides the words for the album. We haven’t heard it yet, but we know it’ll be epic because all the song titles are in lowercase letters, one track is titled “as if your eyes were partly closed as if you honed the swirl within them and offered me… the world,” and there is a ‘silent’ moment just before the final song, “breath of crows.”

Drums Between the Bells will be released in the following formats:

hardback 2CD edition (includes 44-page book & second disc with instrumental versions of tracks from the album)
double 12-inch vinyl (includes MP3 download code of the original album)

Check which format you’d like, send us your credit card information, and wait patiently for your oder to process (or go here if there are any problems). If you’re stingy like me, you can preview the track “glitch” over at the Chocolate Grinder first. (Tip: It’s worth sending your credit card information to us, whether or not you purchase the album.)

Drums Between the Bells tracklisting:

01. bless this space
02. glitch
03. dreambirds
04. pour it out
05. seedpods
06. the real
07. the airman
08. fierce aisles of light
09. as if your eyes were partly closed as if you honed the swirl within them and offered me … the world
10. a title
11. sounds alien
12. dow
13. multimedia
14. cloud 4
