Classic 1980 Punk Film Blank Generation, Starring Richard Hell, Coming to DVD

MVD Visual has announced plans to reissue the classic 1980 punk flick Blank Generation. In fact, it’s coming out next Tuesday, February 23. What better way to describe the film than with a nice quote from the man himself, Richard Hell?

This is a priceless package. The real burnt-out New York in January and February 1978, the Voidoids live at CBGB, Ed Lachman’s cinematography, Elliot Goldenthal’s sound track, Carole Bouquet’s face, my lithe figure, Andy Warhol to break your heart, Luc Sante demonically extracting the ugly truths from me re: the horror of it all (bonus feature which is better than the movie itself)… unique. Spring for it.

Blank Generation tells the classic punk rock story of boy likes girl, girl likes boy, but girl still loves ex. Throw in some classic Voidoids footage, some shots of a dirty NYC, give Andy Warhol a role, and there ya go: Punk Rock!

Shout Out Louds Are Back! Digital EP Up for Sale Now, New Full-Length Up for Pre-Order… All of Which Screams (Shouts) Upcoming Spring Tour

A nation’s pop music is a lot like a school cafeteria. In Sweden, Jens Lekman and The Tough Alliance/Sincerely Yours dreamy Balearic pop sets sit at different tables (pretty close to each other; they trade lunches sometimes), and the weird electronic set (à la The Knife/Fever Ray) sits with one another. There’s a hierarchy, of course, and the more albums you release, the better your seat tends to look from the outside. With so much hype currently swirling around bands like jj, Air France, and El Perro del Mar, it’s easy to forget about Stockholm-based Shout Out Louds, whose last (sophomore) album, Our Ill Wills (TMT Review), came out in 2007.

Yet they don’t plan to disappear in the lunchroom din. (End metaphor.) Last October, TMT reported that Shout Out Louds are soon to be releasing their third full-length, Work. The album, produced by Phil Ek (of The Shins, Fleet Foxes fame), is slated for release February 23 from Merge Records. It’s available for pre-order now, but the winter is long and lonely, so Shout Out Louds have a couple offerings in the meantime.

Work’s first single, “Fall Hard,” is up for digital download from Merge, with bonus tracks “Fall Hard Pt. 2” and “Can’t Explain.” You can watch the video for this bouncy, bittersweet single (the chorus is “If you fall hard/ I fall harder” …need I say more?) on their website, along with the video for “Walls.” Even better, “Walls” is available as a free mp3 download. Tack!

Naturally, these guys have also added more tourdates for the spring since our original story ran in December. Here is the updated list, including North American dates and concluding this summer with a few festivals:

Nice Nice Signs to Warp, Announces New LP. Nice!

Jason Buehler and Mark Shirazi, the constituent members of Portland duo Nice Nice, have been making their brand of “post-everything modern music” for almost a decade. All their experimentation seems to be coming to a head this year, as the group has signed to electronic music juggernaut Warp. The venerable label will put out Nice Nice’s debut record, Extra Wow, on April 6. Drawing from the group’s wide range of influences, the record is said to touch on everything from psychedelia to electronic experiments to krautrock.

Considering the duo’s track record this past decade, it would be unlikely for them to simply twiddle their thumbs until the record’s release. To keep themselves busy until then, the band plans to play a handful of West Coast dates during the days of late February and early March.

Extra Wow tracklist:

01. Set and Setting
02. One Hit
03. A Way We Glow
04. On and On
05. Everything Falling Apart
06. Big Bounce
07. See Waves
08. A Vibration
09. A Little Love
10. Double Head
11. Make It Gold
12. New Cascade
13. It’s Here

Nice Nice West Coast dates:

02.25.10 – Reno, NV – Lincoln Lounge
02.26.10 – San Francisco, CA – Great American Music Hall
02.27.10 – Visalia, CA – Howie & Sons Pizza & Beer
02.28.10 – Isla Vista, CA – The Biko House
03.02.10 – Los Angeles, CA – The Echo
03.04.10 – Sacramento, CA – The Sol Collective
03.06.10 – Portland, OR – Holocene

The Specials Announce Forthcoming “Eighth-Wave Ska Revival” Preceded by North American Performances and Live DVD

The Specials, who have emerged from a seemingly improbable time warp that pulled them straight from 1979 to 2010, have released information on North American performance dates that will be kicked off by an April 13 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The television performance will be the first time that the band have been on American television since a 1980 performance on the late, great American sketch-comedy show Saturday Night Live. Wait… 1980? That doesn’t make sense with my time warp joke!

The Specials have also announced that they will be releasing a “very special” live Digital Video Disc (or DVD) on March 1. The DVD was filmed at a November 2009 performance at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Shirefordshire, England. The video features performances of plenty of classic Specials tunes, as well a bevy of backstage, rehearsal, and interview footage. The DVD also features a “two-tone” version of the show presented in black and white.

Here are those tourdates:

04.15.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Club Nokia
04.16.10 - Indio, CA - Coachella
04.19.10 - Toronto, ON - Sound Academy
04.21.10 - New York, NY - Terminal 5

Lady Gaga a Lock for Lollapalooza?

The early word is out and it looks like Lollapalooza has had half of its headliners revealed. While no official confirmation has been made, it appears, at least to
The Daily Swarm and its many industry sources, that the three-day festival will be top-billed by Lady Gaga, Green Day (still riding the crest of Dookie’s success), and recently-reunited-rockers Soundgarden. Rumors are also swirling like chocolate-and-vanilla swirl cones that The Strokes and Arcade Fire might play too! Plus, I’m speculating that the sixth headliner will be a back-from-the-dead Johnny Cash supporting the final volume of his American Recordings!

But, yes, those are all rumors at this point, so don’t get mad at me if plans change, but keep in mind that Lollapalooza has a pretty good track record of having its lineup revealed (at least the headliners) way earlier than the official announcement, which generally happpens in April.

The fest takes place August 6-8 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL.
