Colin Stetson reveals details on third and final New History Warfare album, plots world tour http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1301/news-13-01-colin-stetson.jpg

Canada has produced many a fine thing, such as You Can’t Do That on Television, high-stacked burger challenges, maple syrup, a functioning healthcare system, funny accents, and of course, Colin fucking Stetson, bursting blood vessels out of his straining neck as he fires heavy breaths into his enormous sax for your listening pleasure. And this Canadian is making his solo comeback this spring with New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light, due out April 30 on Constellation.

As with the last installment of the Warfare series, the new LP was recorded live in single takes, with guest vocals — this time contributed by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, with whom Stetson plays with in Bon Iver — being the only overdubs. The whole shebang was mixed by Australian-gone-Icelander Ben Frost. Check the release page for more details and to preorder on CD or double-LP.

Take a listen to the album’s third track, “High Above a Grey Green Sea,” via Constellation’s SoundCloud and then clean yourself up, because this awesomeness may give you the squirts.

DJ Rashad signs with Hyperdub for Rollin EP, due in March; ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod!!

Yes, we love Hyperdub over here at Tiny Mix Tapes. Three of its releases made our Favorite 50 Albums of 2012 list, including two in the top 5 (Laurel Halo’s Quarantine and Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland’s Black Is Beautiful). And yes, we love footwork here too: footwork releases have made our year-end lists for the past several years, including two from last year: DJ Rashad’s TEKLIFE Vol. 1 and Traxman’s Da Mind of Traxman.

So it is with pure, unfiltered, unadulterated, unsupervised joy to announce that DJ Rashad, tha shiznit of footwork, will be hooking up with Hyperdub for an EP called Rollin. Aside from an announced release month of March, no further details have yet been revealed, but we’re beyond excited over here (Squeo’s behind me right now working on his erks, dribbles, and ghosts, while Nobodaddy has an MPC 1000 in his Amazon cart. On company time, those sneaky fucks!)

Meanwhile, The Manny & Rashad Show, Rashad’s long-anticipated release with DJ Manny, is apparently due February 13 via Lit City Trax. Check out “Look How She Dancing” here:

Dean Ween and Les Claypool will soon have their own fishing show, because what the hell else are they going to do?

So. You already watch Mob Wives and Moonshiners and River Monsters, and you’re going to start watching a fishing show too. According to Glide’s Hidden Track blog, Mickey Melchiondo, a.k.a. Dean Ween — formerly of weirdo-rock duo Ween — leads a secret life as a charter boat captain, and he’s teamed up with Les Claypool of Primus for a reality show that will “fuse sportfishing with music and comedy,” because those three things go together like bacon, lettuce, and tomato, or snap, crackle, and pop, or Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Wait, you don’t like fishing? You’ve never been fishing? Doesn’t matter. Dean Ween says that his show is “a fishing show that you do not have to enjoy fishing to enjoy.” Do you enjoy South Park? The show will be produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who created South Park. Do you enjoy celebrity guests? Dean Ween and Claypool want to take celebrity guests on their fishing trips. Cross your fingers for an episode where Skrillex catches a shark.

Although Dean Ween is currently working on a soundtrack — which will undoubtedly include sea-chanties and the like — the show currently does not have a title, nor does it have a station. Yet.

In the meantime, watch Dean Ween and Les Claypool catch two fish:

OM and Sir Richard Bishop to embark on predestined February tour of spiritual refinement

I’ll go ahead and attribute the absence of OM’s Advaitic Songs on our Favorite Albums of 2012 list to a rather unfeasible circumstance: it was just too good. Or, the staff here at TMT, generally speaking, just didn’t get around to it, as our penchant for secularism and debauchery causes us to sometimes neglect the music beneath explicitly religious album covers. Allow me to unilaterally make a ruling on this now: Advaitic Songs was one of the best albums of 2012. It’s worth many listens.

You could purchase it, you could do something that rhymes with “birate” it (though I certainly don’t advise this), or if you live in a select few cities in the western half of the US, you could bear intimate witness to OM’s ancient homages (intentional or not) by catching them on tour — a tour that begins February 8 in Seattle, Washington.

An OM performance would be worth the price of admission alone, but adding stature to your solidi is guitarist Sir Richard Bishop, who’ll be supporting the duo at each live date. Consider your attendance one of the coolest/most frugal ways of experiencing a different culture.

Dates (all w/ Sir Richard Bishop):

02.08.13 - Seattle, WA - Highline
02.09.13 - Portland, OR - Doug Fir
02.10.13 - Vancouver, BC - Media Club
02.12.13 - Salt Lake City, UT - Urban Lounge
02.13.13 - Denver, CO - Larimer Lounge
02.14.13 - Albuquerque, NM - Sister
02.15.13 - Phoenix, AZ - Crescent Ballroom
02.16.13 - San Diego, CA - Casbah
02.17.13 - Santa Ana, CA - Constellation Room
02.18.13 - Los Angeles, CA - Center for the Arts Eagle Rock
02.19.13 - Santa Cruz, CA - Don Quixote’s Music Hall

Björk starts Kickstarter to fund Biophilia apps for Android and Windows 8

Björk needs your help! And so do the kids! Björk, who released the Biophilia album (TMT Review) in 2011 with a slew of apps for Apple toys, wants to bring those apps to Android and Windows 8 devices in order to help students from low-income households and under-funded schools. Awwww…. Check out the Kickstarter here and read a note from Björk right here:

the biophilia educational program is a new way to teach children about science and music . it has met with success in many cities , sparking interest from kids and educators all over the world , from south america to east asia to africa . the most interest has come from students from low-income households and schools with underfunded art budgets , and the only way to bring the project to those people is to have biophilia reprogrammed for android and windows 8 . the biophilia educational project is strictly non-profit and volunteer-based , and that’s why we need your help .

Nick Cave tours several continents in support of new album; everything sells out and goths get way gother

Nick Cave, International Lord of Mustaches and Human Manifestation of the Preacher’s Hand Tattoos in the 1955 American cinema classic Night of the Hunter, continues to dangle tantalizing, painfully sold-out tourdates in front of fans. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds — including Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos and Conway Savage — are jet-setting around the globe this winter to rep their forthcoming album Push the Sky Away, due February 19 in the United States. Cave and his band of merry men will touch down in Mexico City for a couple days, then head off to Australia before returning once more to the US and Canada. And pretty much every show is sold out.

So it’s a good thing they’ve got these European summer festival dates lined up, huh? And more summer festival dates are rumored to be in the works. The internet is currently all aflutter about the likely timing of a Coachella stop, and I, Liz Louche: Internet Detective, have deduced from Sir Nick’s Dallas dates that he might, just might, have the right timing for a surprise SXSW appearance. That’s just a guess, of course, but HEY NICK IF YOU WANNA COME TO AUSTIN I WILL TOTALLY BUY YOU A 3AM STREET TACO. There now. That’s an incentive, isn’t it. America, you’re welcome.

In other news, the lyrics video for “Jubilee Street”, the second single from the new album, landed on the Nick Cave YouTube channel a few days ago. You know, just in case you got those Unconfirmed Tacos And Sold Out Shows Blues.
