Death From Above 1979 release live session from Third Man Records

Death From Above 1979 release live session from Third Man Records

Seeing Death From Above 1979 live is an enlightening experience, not only because it confirms that — despite all album art to the contrary — the band is not half-elephant, half-Canadian, but also because the experience of seeing two guys with just drums and a bass guitar making an almighty, yet melodic, racket is brutally pleasant.

That being the case, Jack White invited the band into Third Man Records last September to record a DFA 1979 experience direct to acetate so you can now pleasantly brutalize yourself in high-fidelity audio from the comfort of your own lounge room — no long lines at the bar or smelly dance floors to negotiate.

The EP, called Live From Third Man Studios, packs in 11 of DFA 1979’s finest (mostly from their post-reformation chugger The Physical World) and will be released by Third Man Records on April 22. And if you listen really closely to the recording, you might even hear the Mick Jagger clapping and possibly tapping his foot, because he was apparently in the audience when the EP was recorded. So technically this could be classified as a Rolling Stones side-project now.

Listen closely for Sir Mick on “Right On Frankenstein” below, or pre-order you copy at the Third Man Store.
