The Decemberists Announce Fall Tour; Yes, They’re Still Playing That Pretentious, Wank-Off Opera Thing Instead of The Songs That You Love

Man, don’t you kind of wonder if the other Decemberists mighta forgotten about that whole "touring" thing when they agreed to help Colin Meloy create the sprawling and scattered, Tristan-meets-Twilight Saga, prog-folk LP The Hazards of Love (TMT Review) this past spring? Well, if so, then... oops. Cuz they’re still out there playing it. Over and over and over again. (John Moen must be texting frown-y faces to Robert Pollard constantly.)

Yes, that’s right all you Beroul, Wagner, and Magic: The Gathering fans, The Decemberists have just announced a pretty mammoth and mythical slab of tender, juicy, fall-off-the-bone fall dates for their “A Short Fazed Hovel” 2009 tour. And yes, this is the tour that features full performances of The Hazards of Love, with Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden in tow once again for the, um, festivities. And no, you probably won’t get to hear that good old “Mariner’s Revenge Song” there (boo!).

This fall phase of the Faze launches September 20 in Burlington, Vermont, a mere month or so after they wrap up this current, summertime phase of the Faze, which includes an NPR live webcasting and broadcasting of their performance at this year’s Newport Folk Festival on August 1 (which apparently will actually not be The Hazards of Love, but instead a special set for the festival! Hey, play the damn “Mariner’s Revenge Song”!)

Pixies Confirm Doolittle Dates, Chicago Girl Shits Pants

After announcing a European tour, wherein the majority of the setlist would consist of songs from Doolittle and its respective B-sides played in their entirety (TMT News), The Pixies left the New World waiting with baited breath. One local fan (me) was left wondering: “What about my neck of the woods??”

Then the second announcement came along. However, all we got was: “Hey Pixies fans! We’re gonna play in the U.S., at some point, at some places, but we can’t tell you anything more.” When I heard this, I squealed and clapped with delight. Then I told my girlfriend, who is easily the biggest Pixies fan that I make out with, and she preceded to squeal and beg me to buy tickets. The only problem was that I didn’t know where to buy tickets from.

Well, all of that has now changed because of this AMAZING third announcement. The Pixies have proclaimed to the world the locations AND dates for their U.S. Doolittle tour. I immediately texted my girlfriend, as mentioned above (I love you honey!), and she sent back the following message: “What?!? We HAVE to get tickets!!!!!!!!!!!! holy shit I’m about to shit my pants!!!!!!!!! Omg omg omg omg omg omghdsaqyudxjx0jk.”

My sentiments exactly.

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Who Gives a Shit About That Lil’ Whiner… Sax Ruins Release Album Today on Ipecac!

Ah yes, the riddle that confounded the intelligentsia and dunce circles alike for centuries: "What do you get when you match Ruins with a Sax?"

- Examinations of hieroglyphic cartouches were non committal ("What does the "flamingo" sign mean again?" cried generations of sand sweepers).
- Encryption coders worked diligently for years, and in 1971 a decommissioned WWII enigma rotor machine found in a landfill in Idaho inexplicably spat out what was thought to have been the solution (it ended up just being a lost cassette recording hybrid of donkeys screwing and Donkey Kong noises; "Donkey Dong" is now the number one download in 47 countries).
- An obsessed Howard Hughes, high school puzzling teams, the mythical, made-up Seven Summit Dwelling Society (SSDS) of Kilimanjaro, and even I have struggled with trying to figure out the quandary -- but to no avail (most of the TMT co-workers I asked to help quickly suffered from a strange case of being "fuckin' bored with this shit").

The true answer, unveiled officially today, is "Sax Ruins!" Simplicity at its best!

Musically, Sax Ruins is a bit more complicated, but in the best, basest, noisesome way. Ruins' Tatsuya Yoshida (drums) and Nagoya-based Ono Ryoko on alto sax unleash their debut album today on Ipecac Recordings. Although originally formed a couple of years ago to perform Ruins compositions, Yawiquo is the duo's debut and contains 17 songs, some of which are, in fact, interpretive renditions of Ruins' past ruins. It's not so hard to understand, is it?

Yoshida needs little introduction in the freeprogjazzpunk world, having been playing and playing with a vast number of luminaries over a long and distinguished career. Ryoko, on the other hand, has been making waves in improvisational circles due to her adventurous embracing of styles and collaborators (most notably Acid Mothers Temple), her Ryorchestra project, her adoption of techniques like circular breathing (just like Kenny G!), and the creation of her own "Language R" compositional notation. Initial bewilderment aside, the only mystery now is why you are still reading this story instead of hearing the album. Go forth, young sound solvers!

Pissed Jeans Announce August Tour in Support of Forthcoming LP King of Jeans

Allentown, PA's Pissed Jeans are set to both release another record and go on tour this August. The album, King of Jeans, will be their second with the Grungeon Masters themselves, Sub Pop, following 2007's Hope for Men (TMT Review).

Saddle Creek Latest Geographic Takeover: Lawrence, Kansas’ Old Canes (project of Appleseed Cast’s Chris Crisci)

Remember back before 2001 when Saddle Creek was all “Yo, is your band not from the epicenter of awesomeness, a.k.a. Omaha?! Well, don’t bother sending in a demo, because we don’t sign outsiders, man!” Apparently once the label woke up and realized great bands do indeed exist outside the confines of the Cornhusker State, it has been branching out quite a bit, even signing several bands from Canada. Here is their progress thus far:
