It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard from Fiona Apple. Of course, this is most likely because of the multiple legal battles with Sir Paul McCartney, the ghost of René Magritte, and that apple-eating pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean, in which she’s been embroiled for the past seven years concerning her rights to, variously, eat apples, take press photos with apples, and have Apple as a last name. They’ve kept her pretty busy since 2005’s Jon Brion-augmented Extraordinary Machine. But now that Steve Jobs has passed on and Paul’s busy lobbying to replace that Mac computer start-up tone with a new track of his called “Wild Honey Pie, 800% Faster,” the least consequential of all of the humble apple’s would-be masters and commanders has told all her FB friends that she is thinking of sneaking out for a couple of red-delicious shows this march, including Pitchfork’s “Best New SXSW Showcase” on March 15 in Austin, Texas.

Hmm… tourdates? Festival showcases?? Could this mean that Fiona’s elusive 4th LP is finally coming out this year?!? Well, probably. But since the last time we were told to expect her new album soon was an embarrassingly long time ago, I’m just going to keep my mouth shut about that this time so that when I’m linked-to in some future story, I don’t look like a fool. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 24, at noon, because noon is the most popular apple-eating hour of the day.

Dreamend is about to release a new LP on Graveface. Put down your accordions and kazoos for a second, because this shit is crazy.

Hey there, experimental noise folk band. You guys are called Dragon Ghost, right? I heard you just recorded an album about wizard home invaders using only the sounds of cats fighting and frisbees smashing through windows. You’re so avant-garde!!!

I have a question, though. Imagine you’re moving from Chicago to Savannah, and when the moving company finally delivers your valuables, you find all of your instruments in pieces. Destroyed. Snapped cello, splintered banjo, crushed bell set, broken organ. And your studio time is right around the corner. Can you handle this shit, Dragon Ghost?

When Ryan Graveface (a.k.a. Dreamend, also of Black Moth Super Rainbow) recorded And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave, follow-up to 2010’s So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite (TMT Review), he had to handle that shit. He decided to record as planned, only using the damaged instruments. “You can hear these instruments dying in each note,” Graveface says. “Most of the percussion on the record is done by me bashing my anxiety pill bottles onto the floor or table.” The resulting 12 tracks reflect the album’s narrative — that is, the continuation and conclusion of a story begun on So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite, the psychological breakdown and ultimate death of a serial killer, all inspired by a journal Graveface bought at an auction in the woods.

And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave will be available February 28 on Graveface. The LP will approximate a phenakistoscope a.k.a. a Victorian animation machine.

Traxman to release full-length LP on Planet Mu, prepping European tour with fellow footworker DJ Earl

Traxman, aka Cornelius Ferguson, was producing tracks before your momma was born. Which is not to say that he’s “old” or anything, but that your mom gave birth to you when she was especially young. However, I’m also saying that, for someone who has been innovating since the days of 90s ghetto house, it’s surprising that this footwork/juke originator has managed to settle into an easily discernible style without sacrificing the cutting-edginess of his music: his music both pays tribute to early house music and envisages the future of dance music, a reflection of a veteran producer who knows what the hell he’s doing in the studio.

So, it’s a big fucking deal that Traxman, who is part of both the Geto DJz and Ghetto Tek (with DJ Rashad, Spinn, etc.) cliques, is releasing a full-length on Planet Mu. Titled The Mind of Traxman, the 18-track album continues his signature footwork/juke style — most widely heard on the first two Planet Mu footwork comps — which often incorporates soul, funk, house, and 303 acid lines into the usual footwork template of minimal beats, sub bass, and repetitive, cut-up samples. You can hear samples of the tracks at Planet Mu, as well on Mike Paradinas’ mix from earlier this year at the Chocolate Grinder.

Traxman is planning a European tour with fellow Ghetto Tek producer DJ Earl, who has his own full-length, New Era, coming soon on Oslo label Electropix. Details forthcoming. In the meantime, look for The Mind of Traxman April 9 on Planet Mu. And please, someone give Traxman his own reality TV show.

Orcas (Benoît Pioulard and The Sight Below) to release self-titled debut album alongside free sampling of chinook salmon

When it comes to an animal-based moniker through which they can distribute their work, Benoît Pioulard a.k.a. Thomas Meluch and The Sight Below a.k.a. Rafael Anton Irisarri could certainly have chosen worse. The orca whale is simultaneously one of the most endearing and misunderstood animals gracing this fair Earth, and I’m sure the attention whores over at PETA, who have recently compared the presence of these whales at SeaWorld to legitimate, unconstitutional slavery, would be more than willing to agree on this point. Without doing any research to actually figure out why, why exactly are orca whales commonly referred to as “killer whales”? Taking for granted their adeptness at killing, there appears to be some whale prejudice going on here; why don’t we refer to grizzly bears as “killer” bears, for instance? God damn whalist bastards, these days.

I can’t comment on the particular rationale behind Meluch and Irisarri’s choice of appellation; perhaps they hear a complementary relationship between the music that they create and the resonant sounds of their whale counterparts. Or, maybe they just have an unusual appreciation for Puget Sound public transportation, which can be facilitated by ORCA cards. Whatever the case, on April 24, Orcas will be releasing their self-titled debut album via the Berlin-based label Morr Music. A press release notes, “The duo’s music together is a careful balance of chiaroscuro elements, where pop hook and spatial ambience converge. Orcas has [sic] taken an immersive, fluid vector for their passions; a resonant call like sonar from the depths.” Wade over here to listen to the track “Carrion,” and go here to download “Until Then,” a track dedicated to the late Broadcast vocalist Trish Keenan. It’s all quite gorgeous.

White Hills, those spacescuzz savants, get down and dirty on new album and tour

Like rare pirate treasure washed upon the shore, the space-rockin’ scuzzos in White Hills have emerged from New York as a hard-rockin’ psychedelic diamond in the rough. White Hills are the sort of band that set record store nerds’ hearts alight, the sort of band whose feedback knocks 30-year-old punk dust off the ceilings of nightclubs. The fellas in the band got the fuzzed up Spacemen 3-esque sensibilities combined with a smidgeon of Velvet Underground swagger; they sound like a long-forgotten private press record from the dirtiest of garages, but they’ve also got their compasses pointed firmly forward. The band spent 2011 wowing audiences at festivals like ATP New York, Supersonic, and Roadburn, and earning accolades from the UK music press. They also toured with everybody’s favorite freaks, The Flaming Lips, and everyone’s favorite caped sludge metallers, Sleep. And now the band is hitting the road once again, this time for a string of dates in April with Sleepy Sun.

While on tour, White Hills will be repping their upcoming full-length on Thrill Jockey, Frying on This Rock; it’s due March 20. They’re currently showcasing a track from that album, “Pads of Light,” on Pitchfork. Frying was recorded by the formidable Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, Boredoms, Herbie Hancock) in New York, and the tracks have got a brutal, beautiful intensity. Guitarist Dave W. and bassist Ego Sensation are joined on this one by a gentleman known only as Antronhy (Julian Cope’s drummer) on synths and backing vocals, and a young drummer by the name of Nick… Name.

NNA Tapes justly announce Eli Keszler and Keith Fullerton Whitman split LP

The world is corrupt with injustice. The examples are everywhere and abundant: the misconduct of police toward peaceful Occupy protesters, lobbyists in D.C. enabling the momentum of evil corporations, Pitchfork Media dictating taste to impressionable children, the band Fleet Foxes being a band, etc. Now and then, however, justice is served, and justice has manifested itself as a new release of actual good music from NNA Tapes.

NNA Tapes has announced a split LP between world-renowned electronic music composer Keith Fullerton Whitman and multi-instrumentalist composer Eli Keszler. According to the press release, the LP (due out April 3) is a conversation in sound between two prominent artists, one working in the electronic realm (Whitman), and the other in the world of live acoustics (Keszler). This exciting event in musical history may perhaps be the first recognizable step toward a brighter future in decades. And the revolution will be televised, or at least broadcast on NPR in an interview with Eli Keszler.

Yes, my children! A new dawn is born on the horizon! The streets will run with the blood of capitalists! CEOs will dangle from nooses! Fleet Foxes will disband!
