The Flaming Lips have their own whiskey now

To quote Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, “Whiskey… it’s such a volatile drink. Upon pouring a drink it’s like accepting that you may become a werewolf … And really… Who doesn’t want to become a werewolf ??? Ha…” I’m not sure what the hell that means, but at any rate, The Flaming Lips have their own bottle of whiskey coming out. A collaboration with Evanston, Illinois-based FEW Spirits, “Brainville Rye Whiskey” will be a limited-edition release of 5,000 bottles, selling for roughly $125.00.

Seeing as how we’re talking about The Flaming Lips here, you’re probably wondering what the WeIrD aNgLe to this whiskey is. Was it distilled from Coyne’s saliva? Did they age it in a Martian crater? Will it be packaged inside a gummy brain that’s inside a gummy skull? Nope, it’s just your standard bottle of 80-proof whiskey, made from rye, corn, and malted barley; aged in oak barrels; and fermented with French wine yeast for that spicy, sweet taste you crave from all 80-proof whiskeys made under those circumstances.

It does not appear that you will need to drink four bottles of Brainville Rye Whiskey at the same time to get the full experience of it, which, while a slight letdown from a conceptual standpoint, is quite nice for those of us with limited budgets, hands, and liver function. For those disappointed that the band would go in such a mainstream direction with this alcohol however, I say just hold out for the official Flaming Lips absinthe, made with the blood of real live fairies. It’s a product I literally just made up, but one that is surely somewhere on the horizon.

Brainville Rye Whiskey will be available in stores this October. Until then, you can always check out The Flaming Lips on tour at the dates below, or just stare at the whiskey’s psychedelic Status Serigraph-designed label until you get a good buzz going.
