Four Tet announces new album Pink; Thom Yorke psyched!!! http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-12-06-four-tet.jpg

Oh shit, guys. What’s up! Kieran Hebden, here! How is everyone doing? Yeah, I’m doing good, too. You know, I’ve only got a second here to write; Yorke and Burial and I are hitting up our Tuesday-night bowling league in like one minute. But yo, I just wanted to say that I’ve been meaning to write and record and release another album since 2010’s There Is Love in You. Which, you know, turned out alright for me! But Honestly, I’ve been just hanging out and casually recording my jams and hitting clubs to dance and DJ so much that I never really got around to it. You know how it is. Especially when Thom is all like “dude, let’s go pop some of them Bath Salts and shit and hit the town!” I mean, I don’t want to say too-too much about that, but… yeah, that dude is tiring!

Anyway, so I’ve been feeling kinda bad about not releasing a follow-up and all that, but then it just hits me: why don’t I just compile all of my vinyl-only singles that I’ve been kicking out while Thom is still passed out in the tub on Sunday mornings and call it good?!? So, yo, that’s what’s up. I called up those fucking chodes at Pitchfork and told ‘em. “New album coming on August 20.” It’s called Pink, and you know what? I’m gonna make it even easier on myself and put it out digitally on my own Text label! It’s gonna be awesome! I’m done! Well, maybe I’ll put out a CD version in Japan on August 22 on Hostess Entertainment. Boom! Oh, and I also told those fuckers that I want to be on that “Pitchfork Classic” shit. Cuz I mean, come on. Rounds? Fucking awesome record. Shit, anyway, that’s it guys. I gotta jet for the bowling alley. Last week I bowled a turkey. Thom tried to eat its face off! More on that next time. Peace!

Andrew WK hosts panel at My Little Pony convention WHAT WHAT OMG WHAT

Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow WOW.

You know about Andrew WK. And maybe, if you spend a lot of time on the internet, you know about bronies. What’s a bronie? It’s a… (let me pour myself a whiskey before I say this) youngish male who’s a fan of the My Little Pony cartoons, of the word “bro,” and of people who get way too into dressing up like a spandex nightmare horse. But hey, that’s a generalization, right? Not all dudes who like My Little Pony take it to a creepy level. Some just like pastel horsies and sharing and having a good time. And who’s a bigger expert on having a good time than Andrew WK?

So perhaps it’s only natural that Andrew WK will host a discussion panel called “In the Flesh: What Would Pinkie Pie Do?” at a pony convention in Strongsville, Ohio this September called Canterlot Gardens. From the Canterlot Gardens website: “Partying is enriching to everyone’s life - that’s what Pinkie Pie believes. On this side of the fourth wall, we are excited to announce Andrew W.K., the partiest pony of all! Holding the same ideals as the Ponyville party planner, he will be speaking at the Gardens on Friday, September 28th 2012. On that day we invite you to join us for a look into how to make your job as fun as your party, and your party as important as your job.”

“Live pony music” is also promised.

The Psychic Paramount announce US dates, despite neighbor complaints

Bands typically described as “noisy” are some of the best to witness live, especially if you live, as I do, within close proximity to people who might not take kindly to you blaring crescendo-laden noise rock at inadvisable times. There’s also a certain feeling of rebelliousness that comes with attending one of these shows. Noise, in any other environment, typically connotes discomfort, but when you’re in the company of like-minded individuals, who are all there for the same dissonant reasons, it’s like a congregation of secret society members, who all have “Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest playing in their heads as they walk into the venue. Only, of course, it’s not the law that we’re breaking; it’s the quiet hours of our respective apartment buildings or the frustrating rules of a family member with particularly sensitive ears. It’s relief brought about by unrestrained immersion, perhaps with a couple of middle fingers thrown in. Take that, societal norms!

Helping you in your quest for noisy satisfaction this summer are New York-based The Psychic Paramount, who are currently in the midst of a US tour. Their album II (TMT Review) earned a well-deserved spot on our favorite albums list from 2011, so as a presumably faithful reader of TMT, you can be confident in purchasing a ticket for one of their upcoming shows. Need some more convincing? Why in the world would you pass this up:

Scott Walker’s The Drift to receive vinyl edition packaged in a nice suit, a swanky suit

As it happens, you are sitting in a very nice theater. There are seats. There is a stage. There is a red velvet curtain. The curtain opens and a voice, pleasing though peculiar in a way you cannot put your finger on, pulses out of the loudspeaker. “Hello audience, please welcome your friend Mr. Scott Walker.” You applaud loudly.

Scott Walker steps to the middle of the stage. His face is obscured by television static, though the rest of his body is perfectly clear. Somehow, you are still certain that it is him. He approaches the microphone and taps it once. He frowns and, despite the static, you know he has frowned. He speaks into the microphone anyway.

“HELLO THIS IS SCOTT WALKER AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU SOMETHING HISSSSS

I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING RIGHT NOW RIIIIIGHT NOW

IN 2006 I RELEASED A RECORD CALLED THE DRIFT IT WAS A BANNER YEAR IT WAS A BANNER YEAR

IT IS 2012 AND I WILL RELEASE THAT ALBUM AGAIN THIS TIME IN VINYL FORMAT CLUNK CLUNK PSST

LISTEN TO FACT MAGAZINE THEY KNOW THEY KNOW IT IS COMING OUT ON JULY 10 PRE-ORDER IT NOW AT AN ONLINE STORE

GOODBYE WE ARE ALL FILLED WITH BLOOD”

Walker leaves the stage. You applaud Walker’s announcement. Shortly after, a Ramones cover band begins playing. They are not good. You wonder if it is impolite to leave. You frown.

Alva Noto and Byetone form Diamond Version, which may or may not be an homage to Pokémon

Ironically (and until now), two of the three founders of the Germany-based Raster-Noton — Olaf Bender (Byetone) and Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto) — haven’t done much collaborating with each other. Presumably this is a result of the friendship they established when they were teenagers; in other words, they knew (consciously or not) that spending too much time together could prove detrimental, similar to the friend/roommate progression that many college students experience. You can easily imagine how a falling out would occur: “I’m not laying down the rhythms until you clean up the communal fridge, Olaf!”

If you thought the rumor of Summvs being the final collaborative album between Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto was a sign of the former winding down his career, well then, obviously you’d be wrong. FACT reports: under the name Diamond Version, Alva Noto and Byetone have just signed to Mute, through which they’re planning to release five EPs over the rest of this year — the first of which is Technology / Empowering Change, due out July 23. Check out the sufficiently German cover art above. The duo also have a full-length album in the works for 2013.

A lingering question, though — why now, after roughly 16 years at the helm of Raster-Noton, are Nicolai and Bender choosing to fuse their creative minds? Nicolai offers an explanation: “We occasionally performed encores together after our solo sets. These spontaneous and improvised tracks always had a kind of “special energy” which we missed in our solo works … Diamond Version tries to capture this energy and combines it with conceptual ideas…”. Those conceptual ideas include titles and iconography drawn from a “host of corporate slogans,” ultimately used to form an aesthetic “charged with surreal and subversive humor.” I have no idea what this means from a musical standpoint, but Bender describes a style rooted in rhythmic music, but decidedly not club-oriented. “It’s a bit harsh, and a bit more noisy [than our solo projects], but this is not the main focus,” Bender says. It’s all too deep for me.
