If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Does a tour qualify as a tour if it (so far) only spans two separate venues? That’s debatable, but I think people are willing to forgo a discussion on semantics when the band in question is Godspeed You! Black Emperor — repackaged, but with similar ingredients and the same great taste that had you eagerly anticipating the implosion of society back in 2002, when their last LP was released. 2011 saw the post-rock legends reuniting for a North American tour that many had previously thought would never happen, and thankfully, it looks like 2012 won’t, in fact, correspond with a repeat of the band’s temporary dissolution. On the contrary, GY!BE have just announced their first performance dates for the year: on April 15, they’ll play at the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur, California. In the five days following, they’ll perform five consecutive shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Tickets for the show at the Fernwood Resort go on sale this Thursday, December 8 at 12 PM PST through FolkYeah.com. Tickets for the shows at the Great American Music Hall go on sale Sunday, December 11 at 10 AM PST.
And that’s it. No other dates have been announced, but it is worth noting the proximity, both geographically and chronologically, of these California shows with Coachella. It’s also worth recalling stories from this past May, when band member Bruce Cawdon revealed that he and his fellow Montreal misanthropes have indeed been discussing, and perhaps working on, a new album. One might be inclined to think then, that these shows in California may just be a completely acceptable excuse to unveil their new material. If so, it’s reasonable to expect additional dates. If not, well… it is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. You’re obligated to attend.
