Goldrush Music Festival excavates its full 2014 lineup; Wolf Eyes and Eric Copeland to headline

Look who (alternatively: what) is coming up in the world! No, I’m not about to regale you with some lame-ass rags-to-riches story, where an impoverished kid from the inner city grows up to became the next best thing to Billy Mays. Goldrush Music Festival, which began in 2011, and which recently unveiled its already-stellar-enough initial lineup for 2014, has just announced its two headliners for this year’s edition. They are… groovy experimental musician Eric Copeland (of Black Dice), based out of Brooklyn, and the corneas that need no introduction but rather a timid staring-into, Wolf Eyes. And within the context of a lineup that otherwise contains Mount Eerie, clipping., The Howling Hex, Thug Entrancer, DVA, and numerous others, this is obviously the biggest Gold Rush ever. No no, don’t mention the 19th century. Ever.

And for how much?! 13 bucks — about the price of a freakin’ takeout meal these days — will get you a single-day pass, and $25 will get you a two-day pass, plus a companion cassette and limited zine. As a reminder, the festival will take place September 13-14 at the Larimer Lounge and Meadowlark venues in Denver, CO. Black Dice and Wolf Eyes actually have a collaborative history, so here’s a taste of that, if you’re curious.

Full Goldrush 2014 lineup:

Wolf Eyes (Detroit, MI)
Eric Copeland (Brooklyn, NY)

Groundislava announces new album Frozen Throne via Wedidit, finally starts online dating

Los Angeles producer Groundislava a.k.a. Jasper Patterson is known for his contributions to the Wedidit collective, as well as having a moniker that conjures up childlike imagination and wonder. Following last month’s Feel the Heat EP, Patterson is now gearing up to release his third studio album, Frozen Throne, which follows a “thematic narrative of the search for real love in a future cyber-based reality.” Spoiler: the album ends with Groundislava getting a Tinder account. Underwhelming, I know.

In advance of Frozen Throne’s September 23 release via Wedidit and Friends of Friends, Patterson has elected to share lead single “Girl Behind the Glass,” which showcases sensual vocals from L.A. duo Rare Times a.k.a. Anthony Calonico and Alex Talan. The duo’s vocals are featured prominently throughout Frozen Throne, providing words to Patterson’s emotive sci-fi narrative. “Girl Behind the Glass” plays out like an 80s R&B ballad setting the mood for 23rd-century lovemaking, but was released in 2014 and can be heard below.

Frozen Throne tracklist:

01. Girl Behind the Glass (feat. Rare Times)
02. Terminate Uplink
03. Frozen Throne (feat. Rare Times)
04. Under the Glow (feat. Rare Times)
05. The Descent
06. Feel the Heat (feat. Rare Times)
07. October Acid
08. A Way Out
09. October Pt. 2 (feat. Rare Times)
10. Steel Sky (feat. Rare Times)

Horse Feathers announce new album So It Is With Us, make all bald horses and furry birds feel rotten about themselves

I don’t know about you, but when I think of the website Tiny Mix Tapes, I think first and foremost of all its legendary coverage of the band Horse Feathers — the reputation is something of a blessing and a curse, really. But there’s really no sense in fighting it. Ours is simply the voice of shamble-y, Appalachian-style indie-folk-rock, what can I say? But also, when I think of the implacable independent record label Kill Rock Stars, I of course think of what theyare best known for; which is, duh, hilarious albums of Pacific Northwest stand-up comedy.

So how and under what exact circumstances do these two illimitable facts coincide? So glad you asked!

I think it happens when the Portland band Horse Feathers releases a new album on Kill Rock Stars titled So It Is With Us on October 21… and when that album is also just freakin’ HILARIOUS to listen to. So I guess the only question that can rightly be asked is, “well, is this album hilarious to listen to?” I assume so! But let’s just double-check that by asking bandleader Justin Ringle to describe the new album for us.

I wanted to stop. I did all the touring for my fourth record and ended disillusioned and defeated. I didn’t touch my guitar for months. After an arduous period of self-doubt and discovery, I finally arrived at the enlightened idea that maybe it should just be a little more fun. I stopped editing myself as much. The joy of playing live became its own reward, and I dared myself to allow that joy to shape the songwriting. In the end, I was able to let it go, and I don’t own it anymore. Which also feels like joy. That’s the way it was, and so it is with us.

What a knee slapper! I know I’m totally satisfied with the premise of this news piece being fulfilled! You? Good! Then put your freakin’ money where your bullshit mouth is already, and pre-order the thing right over here. Oh, and be sure to check out the trailer down below. And check the band out on tour this fall. No pressure or anything, but, if you don’t do those things, we’ll totally find out.

Sub Pop signs Seattle rap dude Porter Ray, who just dropped a new mixtape

Sub Pop, hitherto known as the label that stood behind the grunge explosion, have well and truly shaken off their metaphorical cardigans now with the recent signing of another Seattle-based avant-rap artist, Porter Ray. This, along with Shabazz Palaces’ recently dropped and heavily rated new album (plus a New York Times article to boot), the label may be on the brink of ushering in a space rap renaissance from Seattle.

Porter Ray is the first signing that Sub Pop’s new A+R man Ishmael Butler (a.k.a. Palaceer Lazaro from Shabazz Palaces) has brought to the label, and a quick listen to the current single “Jewelry” will disperse any doubts as to Porter Ray’s skills and spacey hip-hop credentials.

“Jewelry” is also featured on the brand-spanking-new mixtape that Porter Ray recently dropped on his Bandcamp as a prelude to the album Sub Pop are suggesting will be ready by 2015.

Freddie Gibbs eats a pound of Harold’s chicken, films it in slow motion to appeal to the foodies; tours

Look what Mr. Gibbs has for us today! Why, it’s a musical video set to his lovely tune “Harold’s.” WARNING: visuals include graphic slo-mo shots of french fries and fried chicken smothered in some good old sauce. You might find yourself having a hankerin’ of all kinds of good good because in between bites of Harold’s chicken Freddie Gibbs finds time to nibble on some fine lady friend. It’s a red light special kind of a day. Don’t you wish you could say the same?

The song comes from Gibbs and Madlib’s album Pinata, which if you haven’t heard already, has received some kind words from various trusted outlets. It’s one of those long-ass hip-hop albums that’s actually worth a regular listen. It’s like finding a treasure chest of Harold’s fried chicken in a land devoid of chickens. Pretty sure that’s just the kind of message they were aiming for with this video, too. Hit play and peep where you can catch Freddie on The Lord Frederick Europe Tour 2014, which is a solo tour that’ll have him going all noble on y’all global asses.

Thurston Moore forms new band with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and My Bloody Valentine’s Debbie Googe… and by “new band,” I mean really-really-super-old band!

Dude, for someone who can sure get around, former Sonic Youth front-ish man Thurston Moore sure manages to not really get around much, doesn’t he? First he’s out there putting out solo records… that sound pretty much like Sonic Youth. Then he’s starting “new bands” that… again, sound pretty much like Sonic Youth. And now, OMG GUESS WHAT HE’S DOING and GUESS WHAT IT PROBABLY SOUNDS LIKE??!

Yup, Moore is forming yet another “new band” type thing for his presumably similarly-Thurston Moore-sounding material so that he can continue to make it hard and confusing on all the poor record store clerks who have to figure out how to file this shit.

But what’s so special about this one? Glad you asked, because it certainly isn’t the band name, which seems to be “Thurston Moore Band.” Rather, it’s the fact that this one features Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, non-Kevin Shields My Bloody Valentine member Debbie Googe (she did a lot of legendary not-bass on that legendary Loveless album, don’tcha know), and guitarist James Sedwards (who has played with such bands as Guapo and Chrome Hoof).

And ready or not, here they come, world. Their first performance will apparently be August 19 in Amsterdam, a date previously listed in totally boring by comparison connection with Moore’s solo tour dates linked to his forthcoming solo album, The Best Day, which is due out on Matador this fall… possibly under some additional Thurston Moore-ish moniker that we’re not even aware of yet?

Thurston Moore (solo?) 2014 dates:

08.15.14 - Kiewit, Belgium - Pukkelpop
08.16.14 - Hamburg, Germany - Dockville Festival
08.17.14 - Berlin, Germany - Lido
