It’s about time we had some attractive twin vocalists in the limelight that aren’t Tegan & Sara. With the addition of Benjamin Curtis, sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza make up School of Seven Bells (one part former Secret Machines, latter two parts On!Air!Library!), the dream pop band inspired by shoegazers and Cocteau Twins and inspiring recitations everywhere of Poe’s “The Bells.” The follow-up to their 2008 debut Alpinisms (TMT Review), called Disconnect from Desire, is out July 13 from Vagrant Records/Ghostly International, and handbell choirs are ringing out the news across the country during the morning practice before church. With so many bells a-ringin’, what else could School of Seven Bells do but tour North America?

Lemme in your house: The Music Tapes offer bedside lullabies in your home… literally

This is a weird bit of promo work. The Music Tapes, a.k.a. Julian Koster, recently announced that in August, he will serenade sleepy fans at their personal bedsides in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. These are purportedly much better than the cutesy ditties you wish your mom sang to you as a kid before she turned off the light; The Music Tapes will perform bedtime-appropriate songs from Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes (TMT Review), The 1st Imaginary Symphony for Nomad, and a few new songs.

But let’s break this down for a second — you write to LullaybyeDeliveries@gmail.com to request a visit and a time slot, should you be so lucky. Some strange people who you’ve never met come to your house and sit in your bedroom as you lie in bed, presumably already in pajamas and with your teeth brushed. You’ve never met these people before, but appreciate a hopeful snuggle with sort-of celebrities. Actually, do you even know what Julian Koster looks like? Do you know for sure he’s not someone who will break in your house and steal your LP collection, turntable, and important electronics? (Note: I’m assuming he’s not.)

And though Julian Koster did this sort of thing once before (for the last two Christmases, he offered his services as a caroler house-to-house in the Midwest and the Eastern seaboard — TMT News), does he really want to risk entering a stranger’s house, letting himself be encircled by said stranger and his/her friends and family, and simply trust that his warm milk will be unadulterated and that the door will remain unlocked from the outside?

Okay, so Julian Koster isn’t exactly G.G. Allin and his fans probably don’t tend towards violence, but somebody’s got to think of these things. Can’t you just request to sip Sleepytime tea in a well-lit coffee shop, surrounded by people, right after rush hour but before dark?

Anyway, the same people who emailed LullabyeDeliveries@gmail.com will receive information about a secret location and time to play “St. Nikolai the Wonder Worker’s Wishing Game of Candles” (sort of like freeze-tag, with foot-tall candles) the night after The Music Tapes’ nocturnal visitations. So go ahead and shoot ‘em an email; you can’t lose any sleep over it.

Lullabye Delivery Tour:

08.04.10 - Boston/Cambridge area, MA - bedside lullabies
08.05.10 - Cambridge, MA - St. Nikolai the Wonder Worker’s Wishing Game of Candles
08.07.10 - New York City area, NY - bedside lullabies
08.08.10 - New York City, NY - St. Nikolai the Wonder Worker’s Wishing Game of Candles
08.09.10 - Philadelphia, PA area - bedside lullabies
08.10.10 - Philadelphia, PA - St. Nikolai the Wonder Worker’s Wishing Game of Candles

Swans new album set to be released September 21, 2010, the greatest September 21 ever

In the grand tradition of Serge and his then-adolescent daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg’s duet on “Lemon Incest” comes another potentially controversial father-daughter rock pairing. This time it involves Michael Gira’s three-year-old daughter, Saoirse, sharing vocal duties with freak-folk weirdy Devendra Banhart on a little number called “You Fucking People Make Me Sick.” The track is part of the upcoming album My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky, from Gira’s newly ‘reactivated’ Swans (TMT News). Okay, in reality the only possibly controversial thing about the Swans song is whether it will be ‘pretty awesome’ or just ‘kinda awesome.’

Gira has assembled some good people for this non-“dumb-ass nostalgia act” album. (He says, “THIS IS NOT A REUNION. It’s not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past. After 5 Angels Of Light albums, I needed a way to move FORWARD, in a new direction, and it just so happens that revivifying the idea of Swans is allowing me to do that.”) Swans members from the first incarnation(s) Norman Westberg, Bill Rieflin, Christoph Hahn, and Phil Puleo; new members Chris Pravdica (Flux Information Sciences/Services) and Thor Harris (Shearwater); and guest Grasshopper of Mercury Rev all make an appearance, along with Mr. Barnhart and Ms. Saoirse. The album was financed through sales of the limited edition acoustic Swans album I Am Not Insane earlier this year (TMT News).

The new album comes out September 21 on Gira’s own Young God Records, and a tour is planned for the fall. *

* Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease come to Minneapolis!

01. No Words/No Thoughts
02. Reeling The Liars In

Black Dice’s Eric Copeland gets Strange on new LP; otherwise, he’s a pretty normal dude

Strange Days indeed. Well, at least chameleonesque Black Dice member Eric Copeland seems to think so. With the summoning of his follow-up LP to Alien in a Garbage Dump (TMT Review) on No Age member Dean Spunt’s Post Present Medium label, he has captured (according to the fine folks over at One Thirty BPM) a vomit-crazed collage of psych-induced samples and field recordings spread oh so delicately over two tracks.

Copeland is no stranger to the concept of accompanying spastic art with his releases. If you got the LP copy of Black Dice’s Repo, you know what I’m talking about. So in due form, he’s got the white LP all wrapped up in a silk-screened jacket that I’m just gonna assume is designed by the man himself. As Copeland would have it, Strange Days is being printed in a limited quantity of 600. Keep it strange and head over to PPM and get yourself a copy, pronto.

Urinate is a verb. Noun is a band, and Screaming Females is the result of seeing yours truly in a speedo

Whenever TMT is feeling friendless and in need of some words of encouragement, we look to our favorite novelist Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley) who said, “My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.” Marissa Peternoster must be taking cues from the mystery queen, because the lead Screaming Female is stepping out solo style and releasing her imaginative debut album… today!!

Actually, Paternoster’s Noun project predates her work with the Females but much of it will finally see the light of day today, July 7. Playing on Noun’s Holy Hell record are SF drummer and bassist Jarrett Dougherty and King Mike, plus Don Giovanni labelmates Angela Boylan (Cheeky) and Miranda Taylor (Black Wine, Full of Fancy, Hunchback), who provide additional drum support. Screeching and shredding are, of course, courtesy of Paternoster.

But it’s not all Golden Girls marathons and Swanson Rib Style Boneless Pork dinners for one for the talented Ms. Paternoster, because she and her band chums have announced their next musical step as well. Castle Talk will be the fourth Screaming Females album and promises to vault the power trio into the higher echelons of kickassity. The 12-track album will be released on September 14, again through trusty imprint Don Giovanni.

Power moves:

01. Laura + Marty
02. I Don’t Mind It
03. Boss, Normal
04. A New Kid
05. Fall Asleep
06. Wild
07. Nothing at All
08. Sheep
09. Deluxe
10. Ghost
11. Sold

Lastly, here’s an upcoming Screaming Females show for your amusement:
