If it hadn’t been for Cotton-Eyed Joe, Japandroids would have announced a new North American summer tour a long time ago

We like to claim that we’re all for enthusiastic ideas, but getting too passionate about a concept can be dangerous. For example, what started as zealous affection for one of our beloved creatures has slowly turned one man into this. In the world of human-feline transmogrification, you just have to know when to pull in the reins. When it comes to music, full-throttle enthusiasm is always encouraged, and nothing is fuller and throttler than Japandroids live. Eager overachievers Brian King and David Prowse have announced a month-long North American tour beginning in late August.

Having enchanted everyone the world over with Post-Nothing (TMT Review) in 2009 on Polyvinyl, Japandroids bring dignity and style to music once again by means of a relentless, jack-hammering intensity and this latest tour promises a punishing mix of pre-Post-Nothing tracks, Post-Nothing gems, and post-Post-Nothing tunes that the duo have been refining for release on their highly-anticipated sophomore album.

Lightning Bolt almost done recording new album; meanwhile Brian Chippendale sets aside web comics to exfoliate some Primordial Pus

Like many folks who used to care about Providence, Brian Chippendale was bored with the city and its “scene,” or whatever was left of it. He needed something to do to kill some time. Mr. Chippendale then remembered he loved comics, and wrote one. A rather large one, at that. He also, perhaps inspired by tentacle monster Jeph Jacques, decided to start up a a webcomic, called Puke Force, written in a manner similar to his previous tome.

Then, Mr. Chippendale remembered two very important things:

1. Writing a webcomic, especially after being inspired by a tentacle monster, is a rather arduous and long-term commitment.

2. Mr. Chippendale plays music in bands such as Black Pus and Lightning Bolt.

Thusly, Brian Chippendale went back to the recording studio and recorded a new Black Pus album, filled with insane drum pop that only he knows. Called Primordial Pus, it is now available on Load Records, and it shall take you many places that you cannot grasp in form. Do your best to grasp a track from it over at the Chocolate Grinder.

While working on the Black Pus album, Mr. Chippendale spoke to a journalist in Buffalo about Black Pus and other things (e.g., groupies), and mentioned another exciting project: A brand new, shiny Lightning Bolt album! Expected to be a more “upbeat” continuation of TMT favorite Earthly Delights, Mr. Chippendale and fellow Brian Brian Gibson began recording last month, with the intent of releasing the new album sometime between the end of this year and early next. Then, perhaps, Brian Chippendale will write another comic.

Primordial Pus tracklisting:

01. Ha Ha Havok
02. Police Song
03. Cave of Buttterfly
04. Favorite Blanket, Favorite Curse
05. The Wicked West
06. Hole in The Ground
07. Beneath the Wheel
08. I’ll Come When I Can

RIP: Darryl Pandy, Chicago house pioneer

From The Wire:

As reported via Facebook at the end of last week, house diva Darryl Pandy has passed away. Pandy was the vocalist on Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk’s “Love Can’t Turn Around” from 1986, which signalled a turning point for House music, particularly in the UK.

Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk and Pandy (in a bright blue glittery top) performed the track on Top Of The Pops in the same year, with Pandy ending the flamboyant performance by kicking his shoes off and lying on the stage. Pandy, in the words of The Wire’s reviews editor Derek Walmsley, was at that time “the gayest man ever to appear on Top Of The Pops - and I mean that as a compliment”.

Domino signs the whole Real Estate family in summer BBQ spectacular

For lackadaisical New Jersey indie rockers Real Estate, summer time is their bread and butter… time. Even though their self-titled debut (TMT Review) has been out for roughly a year-and-a-half by now, plenty of plaid-clad youths should be nursing a beer and a dog to their warm, swaying songs this summer. Just as summer is the ideal time for Real Estate’s music, it is also the ideal time for news stories about Real Estate. So here’s your Tiny Mix Tapes summer news jam 2011 (stay young forever never change): Real Estate have signed to UK-based label Domino. If all goes as planned, the label should be putting out the group’s sophomore record this October.

In the past, Real Estate and their satellite projects have been putting out music through a variety of labels, including Underwater Peoples, Woodsist, and Mexican Summer. But now, they appear to be exclusively Domino clients. In addition to putting out Real Estate records, the label plans to put out future music from guitarist Matt Mondanile’s Ducktails and bassist Alex Bleeker’s Alex Bleeker and the Freaks. Real Estate and Domino: true summer buddies ‘til the end.

RIP: Carl Gardner of The Coasters

From Rolling Stone:

Carl Gardner, the lead singer of the 1950s vocal group the Coasters whose tenor voice powered such classics as “Poison Ivy,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Young Blood” and “Searchin’,” has died of unknown causes. He was 83. Gardner co-founded the group in 1955 and is the only member in its every incarnation over the past 50 years — though in recent years health problems have kept him off the road. “Carl Gardner was one of the great lead voices of the rock and roll era,” soul legend Sam Moore said in a statement.

Jacuzzi Boys get out of the water long enough to announce a sophomore full-length, then jump in the pool to cool off

You may have heard about Jacuzzi Boys if you’re one of many who dabble in the latest trend of 60s-inspired garage rock bands, or if you’re from Miami and enjoy the sparse local scene not hailing from Gainesville. These guys have released splits and 7-inches with King Khan, Nobunny, Vivian Girls, and Woven Bones, so if you’re one of the aforementioned dabblers and know your stuff, you’ve heard them. The trio’s debut full-length, No Seasons, came out in 2009 on the Orlando label Floridas Dying, and two years later, they’ve announced a second full-length, this time to be released on Hardly Art.

Despite the sunshine, citrus-packed diet, and speedos that Florida has to offer, the Jacuzzi Boys left their home state to record the new album, Glazin’, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, at a studio closest in name to one you might find down in the great retirement sector of the South (Key Club Studios). According to guitarist/lead singer Gabriel Alcala, the production is definitely a step up from that on No Seasons: “While No Seasons was a primal wallop, Glazin’ has a slight sheen of a studio environment. Moving beyond the beauty and harshness inherent in a life spent within a single climate, Glazin’ instead offers a take on the culture that surrounds that environment: girls, cruising, air conditioning, and ‘raspberry feelings.’” Right, guys. Living in Miami and wearing short sleeves in December is just so hard. It truly is miserable when the possibilities of layering and scarves are abolished from your personal style options.

Glazin’ is out on August 30, when the average temperature in Miami is about 90 degrees and even the most attractive person starts to look like Iggy Pop (a confirmed fan — kind of) after a couple hours in the sun. Just remember not to leave your vinyl copy in the car if you run post-record-store errands.

Glazin’ tracklisting:

01. Vizcaya
02. Automatic Jail
03. Glazin’
04. Cool Vapors
05. Libras and Zebras
06. Crush
07. Silver Sphere (Death Dream)
08. Zeppelin
09. Los Angeles
10. Koo Koo with You
