Jar Moff releases Commercial Mouth LP on PAN, for all the echolocation/laser/hip-hop fans out there

Jar Moff releases Commercial Mouth LP on PAN, for all the echolocation/laser/hip-hop fans out there http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1211/news-12-11-jar-moff.jpg

Imagine: a world where magical underwater dolphins prank call each other and leave lengthy voicemails consisting of heavy breathing over lush Myst-like waterfall soundscapes, before diving into a super rowdy game of laser tag, and then finally attending a jazz show. Now this may not have been your fantasy at the beginning of the day, but now that you know it exists, why not? Why not make it your fantasy? Because it does exist, in the mind and tunes of Athens-based sound collage artist Jar Moff.

Come December 7, PAN will release Jar Moff’s debut LP Commercial Mouth as a digital album and an LP. This is the fella’s first full-length LP (sure, it’s only two tracks, but they’re LONG ones. That’s what matters, right?); he did a digital release for Leaving Records and a remix on the Harald Grosskopf Synthesist/Re-Synthesist LP last year. If you’ve ever listened to hip-hop records and thought, “what’s with the lack of laser swooshes and dolphin squeaking?” well then Jar Moff might just be your new best friend; check out the excerpt:

Yo La Tengo announce new record Fade, go on tour, briefly consider changing name to Yo Lo Tengo

Yolo this! Yolo that! That’s all I ever hear from the kids these days. Well, why not ease up on the Yolo for a second and get into some Yo La. Yo La Tengo that is! Hello, I am somebody’s dumb indie rock dad and I’m hear to tell you that Yo La Tengo have a new album coming out soon.

Yo La Tengo’s 13th album is titled Fade and it will be released on January 15. Like basically every Yo La Tengo record released in roughly the last two decades, Matador will be handling the release. If you’re a cool indie rock dad like myself, you’ll want to pre-order the record immediately. Well, hey champ. you can do that right here at Matador’s website. If you order the record’s deluxe edition, you will receive a bonus 7-inch featuring covers of Todd Rundgren’s “I Saw the Light” and Times New Viking’s “Move to California.” Todd Rundgren? Times New Viking? In one place? Wowzers.

Now, sit down and let’s listen to “Before We Run,” the first released track from Fade. Go right here to listen to the song and, while you’re there, also watch the animated video. It was done by Emily Hubley! The sister of Georgia Hubley! You know, the drummer for Yo La Tengo! You kids don’t know anything. Anyway, “Before We Run” is actually Fade’s closing song. I assume that’s a typo, considering that the song is less than 10 minutes long.

As per tradition, Yo La Tengo are doing a series of Hanukkah shows at the esteemed Hoboken, NJ venue Maxwell’s. Though we are not Jewish, I am dragging you to all those shows. After that, I will drag you to a number of shows on Yo La Tengo’s world tour, which begins in January. Look, kid, you’re going to watch a lot of Yo La Tengo, whether you like it or not.

Unwound release live LP version of Leaves Turn Inside You, unveil online archive

The internet! In a place long ago and far away, Cyberspace’s great gasping artificially conscious beast was begat of Mr. Gore and a wacked-out speedball of irony, snarky comment sections, and funny cats. In its early days, this primitive creature existed solely of Angelfire websites and X-Files message boards, gradually growing in sophistication and power until that most glorious of days — TODAY! — when Unwound bring their own history back to life with an online tour museum of sorts: the Unwound Archive. In this museum, you can be naked. You can chew tons of gum and take all the photos you want. It’s like a paradise for people who have always had really low-level dreams of what they wish they could do in a museum… but really high-level dreams of what kind of musical history they wanna poke around in, within said museum.

See, Unwound are showing off some artifacts from their last tourdates in 2001 and 2002: videos, interviews, fliers, all that jazz. Plus new t-shirts! This museum never closes, you gum-chewing, naked freak; you can sit and listen to Unwound live shows all damn night long if you want. But if that’s not enough for you, on December 11, the band is also releasing a live double LP version of their 2001 masterpiece, Leaves Turn Inside You, consisting of live performances from their final tour. Each track was recorded by Unwound superfan and bootlegger, Mike Zeigler — a fella referred to as “The Kid” and deeply devoted to Nirvana and rock ‘n’ roll in general — who accompanied the band on their final tour. So, you can watch your Unwound tour videos on the internet while syncing up the new live version of Leaves Turn Inside You, reliving those hazy, magical days when everyone had juno.com email addresses and you shared that final moment with Unwound at Bimbo’s in San Francisco.

Live Leaves tracklisting:

01. We Invent You (10/16/2001 SF, CA. Bimbo’s)

RIP: Austin Peralta, composer, pianist, Brainfeeder recording artist

From the Los Angeles Times:

Austin Peralta, the 22-year-old jazz piano prodigy, composer and son of professional skater Stacy Peralta, has died. Flying Lotus, the beat producer and labelhead who released Peralta’s music, confirmed the news Thursday morning via Twitter, writing: “it kills me to type that we lost a member of our family, Austin Peralta. I don’t really have the right words right now.” Peralta’s cause of death has not been announced.

Peralta’s recent output has ranged from collaborations on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records imprint, including the pianist’s 2011 album “Endless Planets,” and session work for artists including Erykah Badu and the Cinematic Orchestra. But Peralta first made his international mark at age 15 at the Tokyo Jazz Festival, where he and his trio performed a set that confirmed a pianist with prodigious talent.

The Music Tapes announce The Traveling Imaginary tour in locations both stationary and real

If you’re looking to cast your vote for President of Whimsy, then stop. That is not a real thing. Even if it was, they wouldn’t even bother having elections. Julian Koster would win every single time. Master of the singing saw? Check. Creator of otherworldly records as The Music Tapes, like this year’s Mary’s Voice (TMT Review) on Merge? Check. Organizer of holiday singalong shows in fan’s home? Check again. The man is joyful whimsy personified.

To lock his position as President of Whimsy in place forever, Koster has announced the first run of dates for The Music Tapes’ upcoming Traveling Imaginary Tour. What makes it different from a traveling realism tour? Well, for every date, the band will pitch a circus tent built specifically for the tour. Contained inside will be a night of songs, games, movies, amusements, stories, magic, and many other fantastic attractions. Check out the typically wonderful trailer for the tour here, or embedded below.

Undertakings like this aren’t easy, even if you are THE PRESIDENT OF WHIMSY. The Music Tapes have already received help from their fanbase, in the form of a very successful Kickstarter campaign, but they still need your assistance to make this thing run smoothly. If you are interested in being part of the band’s tent pitching crew, shoot them an e-mail at imaginarytentcrew@gmail.com. Beyond that, the group needs help booking the rest of their tour for February and March. Do you have a clear interior space that is at least as big as 26’ x 38’ and features ceilings 10-feet tall or higher? Then send the band an e-mail at travelingimaginary@gmail.com and invite them to your town.

Music Tapes dates:

01.23.13 - Winston-Salem, NC - Krankies Coffee
01.25.13 - Athens, GA - 40 Watt Club (two shows)
01.28.13 - Carrboro, NC - Cat’s Cradle (two shows)
01.29.13 - Durham, NC - Duke Coffeehouse
01.31.13 - Washington, DC - Rock & Roll Hotel
02.02.13 - New York, NY - Church for All Nations (two shows)
02.04.13 - Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church Basement
