Jel and Serengeti tour together, form supergroup, title supergroup Serenjel, realize Serenjel is a terrible name, disband supergroup

Anticon powers, unite! Two of the label’s strongest rappers and producers, Jel and Serengeti, are getting together for a whole bunch of touring this fall. Soon, it will be as if the two entities have become one, fused together to create an unstoppable indie hip-hop force. From here on out, they will be known as Serenjel. Well, actually, that sounds terrible. From here on out, they will be known as Jelengeti. That sounds better, but still doesn’t quite sound good. Fine, from here on out, they’ll keep being Jel and Serengeti. Why be two entities when you can be one, right?

While the two are going to be spending a whole three months together, they will have plenty of company. These dates will find them teaming up with a number of like-minded compatriots, including Main Attrakionz, Sole, Mykki Blanco, and Doseone. Perhaps they’ll give another shot at this supergroup idea, provided they can find a not-terrible name. Jelengeti Blanco! Jel Attracengeti! Solengetjel! Oh my god, these are only getting more and more terrible. Focus on the dates these two are playing. Those will be less terrible.

Julia Holter announces North American dates and new single

Julia Holter hasn’t been wasting time. Following last year’s breakthrough LP Ekstasis and her recent contributions to Mark So’s mesmeric Reading Illuminations tape, she’s just dropped a third cut from her new album Loud City Songs, out on Domino in just a couple weeks.

It’s called “Maxim’s I,” and it’s a psych-symphonic stunner. The piece — half of a dyad said to serve as Songs’ centerpiece — is a glistening sea of synth swells, glissando strings, and cymbals lightly brushed. It sounds a bit like Julianna Barwick with half the reverb, Brian Wilson just before his mid-SMiLE breakdown with twice the reverb, and Autolux at their dourest — but most of all, it sounds like the new Julia Holter.

Check below for the tune, its making-of dark room montage, and Holter’s many international tour dates.

Richard Youngs trades in birkenstocks for shit kickin’ boots, releases country album, tours US

Richard Youngs has done a whole lot of things, so it’s not often we get to bring you news of a “Richard Youngs First,” but here it is: Richard Youngs will be releasing his first album for Ba Da Bing! Records on September 3. Also a first — it’s a country record sure to top the charts at WPIG FM The Pig, one of America’s top country hits stations. Nothing like songs about pickups, whiskey, and the sweet love of a lonely woman to stir up the interest of the American public.

Just kidding — Ba Da Bing is selling the record as Youngs’ first country outing, but the album, titled Summer through My Mind, sounds very much in the vein of his shambling folk output, with long tracks of strummy guitars, strained, repetitive vocals, and wayward, indecipherable tales. Simon Joyner talks over a track with lyrics by Youngs’ six-year-old son based on a story Youngs the senior wrote as a boy. And it’s like 10+ minutes. Just needed to get that in there to clearly demonstrate that this isn’t “Jesus Take the Wheel, Pt. II”. Nice try, though, Ba Da Bing.

To support the album, Youngs will be making the rare hop across the pond, performing a very limited number of shows on the East Coast. The man is a legend, and unless you live in the UK (where you can probably see him whenever, bastards), it’ll be worth the price of admission. Tour dates and tracklisting below.

Summer through My Mind tracklisting:

01. Mountain of Doom
02. Misjudgement
03. Spin Me Endless in the Universe
04. Summer through my Mind
05. The Future is So Different Today
06. Story of Jhon
07. Binary Stars Over Venice
08. Goodbye Oslo Rose

09.02.13 - Northampton, MA - Feeding Tube Records #
09.03.13 - Boston, MA - Great Scott
09.05.13 - Brooklyn, NY - ISSUE Project Room

DJ Shadow brings All Basses Covered tour to North America, wants you to know he’s still really into vinyl

In today’s News That Will Make You Feel Old, here’s a reminder that DJ Shadow has been dropping beats long enough to have his own Best of, last year’s Reconstructed: The Best of DJ Shadow. (Last year he also released an even fancier Best of box set, Reconstructed: The Definitive DJ Shadow. It’s different because it’s DEFINITIVE, see.) But today’s DJ Shadow news isn’t just about making you feel like an early midlife crisis is coming on, oh no! It’s also about how DJ Shadow is touring North America this late summer/fall. Which is good! See? Stop feeling horrible about where you’re at in life right now and GET SOME CONCERT TICKETS!!!!

This is why I don’t work in marketing. Anyway, DJ Shadow is fresh off a two-week stint in Europe and Japan, and he’s bringing his All Basses Covered 2013 tour to select US and Canadian cities. All Basses Covered is different from previous tours because DJ Shadow is incorporating previously unreleased work and live remixes by ditching drum pads (for now) and going with digital software and Pioneer CDJs. “To me it doesn’t matter if it’s a crate of records or a stack of CDs or a playlist of MP3s. I still buy vinyl and I would still prefer to play vinyl where possible,” DJ Shadow says, just in case you were like, “Ugh, even this guy’s into laptop wizardry now?” Until Shadow’s latest tour kicks off, you can check out a very special mix the San Francisco-based legend did for Diplo “and friends” at the BBC’s Radio 1 online.

Colin Meloy announces his first solo tour in five years, admits to past use of performance-enhancing thesauruses

Are you… intellectual? Do you know what the word “mawkish” means off the top of your head? Do you like the way Random House’s book binding glue smells a little more than Double Day’s? Are you thinking to yourself right now, “that’s a trick question, Nobodaddy, because everyone knows that Random House totally owns Double Day?” Great! Then this-here Colin Meloy solo tour is probably right up your old-timey, nine-pin bowling alley.

The Decemberists frontman has recently announced that he’ll be heading out for his first solo jaunt across the US since 2008 (he’s recently been devoting quite a bit of his time and energy to The Wildwood Chronicles, a series of kids’ books that he and his wife co-created.) But now he’s back in the singin’-songwritin’ saddle, complete with a new EP of cover songs that he recorded special for this tour that will comprise the fourth volume of a running series of these tour EP things called Colin Meloy Sings… (the previous three paid homage to the likes of Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke).

So… yeah. I guess that’s it. If any of that stuff sounds good to you, here’s the cities he’ll be in. Along with the days he’ll be in them.

11.01.13 - New York, NY - Town Hall
11.02.13 - Glenside, PA - Keswick Theatre
11.04.13 - Somerville, MA - Somerville Theatre
11.05.13 - Washington, DC - Lincoln Theatre
11.06.13 - Durham, NC - Carolina Theatre of Durham
11.08.13 - Atlanta, GA - Variety Playhouse
11.09.13 - Louisville, KY - Headliners Music Hall
11.11.13 - Chicago, IL - Park West
11.12.13 - Madison, WI - Majestic Theatre
11.13.13 - Minneapolis, MN - The Woman’s Club

RIP: Tim Wright, bassist for DNA and Pere Ubu

From The Cleveland Plain Dealer (via Billboard):

Tim Wright, the original bassist in the Cleveland-born avant-garde rock band Pere Ubu, died Sunday, according to a notice posted on Facebook by Pere Ubu frontman David Thomas:

“Tim Wright died Sunday, August 4 2013, reports longtime partner Mary Ann Livchak. He was an original member of Pere Ubu and later a contributor to the No Wave scene of New York City.”

Pere Ubu was formed in Cleveland in 1975 by Rocket from the Tombs veterans Thomas and the guitarist Peter Laughner. The band released its first single, “30 Seconds Over Tokyo/Heart of Darkness,” that year with a lineup that included Wright, keyboardist Allen Ravenstine, guitarist Tom Herman and drummer Scott Krauss.

Wright left the group in 1978 to join the New York no-wave band DNA.
