Jenny Hval announces headlining North American dates, provides more information about genitalia than a high school sex ed class

The music of Norwegian songwriter Jenny Hval is fluid, graceful, challenging work that provokes intense thoughts about gender and sexuality. It also has a whole bunch of references to genitalia. That is not a bad thing! To drop genital mentions in a non-juvenile way is something only few musicians have mastered, Hval being possibly the most accomplished of all.

That said, if you’re the kind of person who blushes at the word “clit,” then maybe Jenny Hval’s upcoming string of North American headlining dates aren’t for you. After touring Europe throughout June, Hval is heading to North America for a stretch of shows beginning in August and stretching through September. Accompanying her on nearly every date will be Seattle-based songwriter Briana Marela, the one exception being a stop at Raleigh’s Hopscotch Festival.

Hval’s latest album Apocalypse, girl is due out June 9 through Sacred Bones. Watch the new video for the album’s first single “That Battle Is Over” at the Chocolate Grinder. Directed by Zia Anger, who also directed Hval’s “Innocence Is Kinky,” the video features musician Melissa Auf Der Maur, actress Cornelia Livingston, a great green jacket, wallpaper, and a small child, among other people and things.
