Yikes. I get a little weary when successful one-city festivals start expanding internationally, because it reminds me of All Tomorrow’s Parties, and we should all know by now how that quixotic attempt at omnipresence regrettably turned out.
But hopefully MUTEK, which has existed outside of its native Montreal since 2003, can keep up their stellar reputation for organized curation with their latest geographical move. Clearly, the organization has reached the status of being world-renown yet simultaneously somewhat underground. They’ve recently wrapped up workings in Mexico (after the September earthquake postponed this year’s edition), and they’ve also held events in Barcelona, Tokyo, Dubai, and Bueno Aires.
In fact, it’s been a little conspicuously odd that MUTEK has so far avoided the Great Satan in between Canada and Mexico, but something about San Francisco must’ve recently appealed to founder and director Alain Mongeau (and co-directors Miroslav Wiesner and Gabrielle de Villoutreys). Because the first edition of MUTEK San Francisco is officially set to take place next May 3-6, with an official lineup to be announced at some point in the near future (Think “electronic music,” der).
In fact, they’re currently taking proposals, so if you make beats and have always wanted to see the house from Full House, now’s your chance.
