I’ll level with you. I’m not a My Morning Jacket fan. Don’t get me wrong, they’re fine. I like “One Big Holiday.” Z is an okay album. They’re just not my thing. Jim James wears crazy space boots, which is admittedly the first thing I think when I think My Morning Jacket. But let’s say I was a different person. Let’s say I loved My Morning Jacket. Let’s say I see them every year. Let’s say I think Z is a fantastic album. Let’s say I barely think of Jim James’ crazy space boots and, when I do, I think they’re radical. And let’s say I live in Port Chester, New York.
Well, that would make me the luckiest person in the entire world.
Technically, My Morning Jacket have announced a four-date tour for the very end of the year. I say “technically” because a tour traditionally consists of shows in a minimum of two different cities. My Morning Jacket will be playing in exactly two cities at the end of the year: Port Chester, NY, and Boston. This consists of a tour, but, man oh man, My Morning Jacket are playing some serious favorites. Boston gets a measly one date, while Port Chester gets a whopping three. Jeez, guys, what’s so great about Port Chester? And what is Boston? Is it chopped liver? You are acting like it’s chopped liver.
Hold on, though. There are some good reasons for that disparity in shows. The Boston show isn’t any ordinary show: it’s a New Year’s Eve show at the Agganis Arena, with support from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Actually, the Port Chester shows aren’t any ordinary shows either. Those three shows will take place in the city’s historic Capitol Theater, which was recently re-opened earlier in the year, as part of the venue’s Spontaneous Curation series. Perhaps I was looking at this wrong. Perhaps every My Morning Jacket show is special. Perhaps that is why Jim James wears those space boots.
