Nada Surf announce covers record If I Had a Hi-Fi, tour; Milwaukee band IfIHadAHiFi very pleased http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-10-03-nada-surf.jpg

You have to wonder what is happening to a band when they decide to do an album of covers. It’s been done both successfully (Dirty Projectors “covering” Black Flag) and awkwardly (Rob Halford of Judas Priest covering traditional Christmas hymns), but either way, there is something earnest about cover albums, and in this great country of America, you’re allowed to do anything you want when you turn 18 — or in this case, when your band turns 18.

The band is Nada Surf, and the album is called If I Had a Hi-Fi. Why is it called that? Because it’s a palindrome! And maybe, according to the Milwaukee noise-rock band IfIHadAHiFi, in honor of Milwaukee noise-rock band IfIHadAHiFi! (In reciprocation, IfIHadAHiFi have decided to name their forthcoming EP Nada Surf, citing Negativland and their U2 record as influence.)

No tracklist yet, but Nada Surf will cover The Soft Pack (formerly The Muslims), The Moody Blues, Kate Bush, Arthur Russell, and other artists that a lot of people really, really, really like! The record will only be available at shows, so go see ‘em.

Die Antwoord sign to Interscope, Sacha Baron Cohen humor is reaffirmed as “still funny”

The Music Industry (yes, THIS Music Industry) has done it again! Interscope has officially signed Die Antwoord (they’re that fake South African hip-hop crew that got internet-famous last month for still liking Ali G… and also for doing nothing) to an honest to goodness major label contract. And while it’s no secret that there are literally trillions to be made off of these guys who aren’t real musicians and are basically a little less funny than Andy Samberg, there’s no need to thank The Music Industry. Good, quality music that respects the intelligence of its intended audience is its own reward.

Die Antwoord are working on a debut album as we speak. They are also scripting a movie. They’ve also got Disctrict 9’s Neill Blomkamp hard at work directing their next video. Again, money is no object when it comes to the production of good, quality music that respects the intelligence of its intended audience. There’s no word yet on when any of these projects will see release, but it’s pretty safe to say that, now that these longterm career-minded megastars are on board, the Music Industry’s financial troubles are over.

In unrelated news, here’s some footage of the Hindenberg blimp disaster.

Deerhoof reissue two classic LPs for Record Store Day, tour

To show their vast appreciation for the physical medium of recorded music and for the mere fact that record stores even exist in today’s digitally drenched world, indie heavyweights Deerhoof have decided to re-release two of their classics in celebration of this year’s upcoming Record Store Day on April 17. The two albums that the band have deemed worthy of bonus-laden re-release are 2003’s Apple O’, which many consider the group’s strongest statement to date (and graced the page of many a end-of-decade list [though, we chose Reveille]), and 2005’s Green Cosmos EP, which has been a tough find for some time because of self-admitted poor marketing upon original release. Not only are these gems of the musical wizardry that is Deerhoof being slathered onto pristine color vinyl, but they are also accompanied by expanded artwork and bonus tracks. Thanks Kill Rock Stars!

Apple O’ vinyl reissue tracklist:

A1. Dummy Discards a Heart
A2. My Diamond Star Car
A3. Heart Failure
A4. Panda Panda Panda
A5. Apple Bomb
A6. Flower
B1. Sealed With a Kiss
B2. L’Amour Stories
B3. Hayley and Homer
B4. Dinner for Two
B5. The Forbidden Fruits
B6. Adam+Eve Connection
B7. Blue Cash

Bonus tracks:

Dummy Discards a Heart (live 2003)
The Forbidden Fruits (Chris demo)
Panda Panda Panda (first performance 2002)
My Diamond Star Car (live 2002)

Green Cosmos EP vinyl reissue tracklist:

A1. Green Cosmos
A2. Byun
A3. Hot Mint Air Balloon
A4. Kokeko Kitten
B1. Come See the Duck
B2. Malalauma
B3. Spiral Golden Town

Bonus tracks:

Bonnaroo is all about the laughs as it announces comedy lineup with Conan O’ Brien; Hahaha! I’m laughing already!

It’s a funny day today, as the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival announced the comedy lineup for the 2010 festival. This year, the chuckles and guffaws will be provided by:

• Conan O’ Brien (who will also be MCing the “What” stage on Friday/Saturday)
• Margaret Cho
• Aziz Ansari
• Jeffrey Ross (who will roast the festival)
• Greg Giraldo
• Bo Burnham
• Doug Benson
• Nick Kroll
• Paul Scheer
• Rob Huebel
• John Roberts
• Baron Vaughn
• Chelsea Peretti

The comics will provide a respite from the traditionally hot and sweaty outdoor festival weather and will be performing in an “ever-popular, seated, air-conditioned comedy venue,” aptly titled “The Comedy Theatre.” Expect more comics to be added!

Bonnaroo festival organizers have also announced the “Bonnaroo College Comedy Tour,” wherein past comedic Bonnaroo alumni (like Amy Schumer, Pete Holmes, and Kumail Nanjani) will travel across the US visiting local colleges and bringing a couple laughs to the despressing world of the modern US college systems.

More information about Bonnaroo (tickets, dates & times, and musical performers) can be found at Bonnaroo.com. And don’t forget: Conan O’Brien’s going on tour!

Bodysong, film scored by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, is so available on DVD

Finally the good people of Britain are getting another dose of Bodysong, the “documentary about human life” (according to Wikipedia) scored by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. While the name may conjure up visions of an 80s-era nutrition-themed Epcot Center ride, the film is actually a crazy cool montage of old newsreel clips and home movies compiled by director Simon Pummell.

Originally released in 2003, the new Bodysong DVD comes out March 22 in the UK and features Greenwood’s audio commentary and the blessed feeling you get when you help Radiohead do something good.

Re: Beach House. Subject: First EP remastered. CC: All credible memes.

Here on the informational super highway, we see all. We know all. And now, you can too! HeartBreakBeat Records has remastered and reissued the self-titled Beach House EP. Yeah, it’s good. Now on highly popular black vinyl, this new reissue comes full with exciting things like:

• Improved sound quality!
• Same deluxe packaging as the original!
• Ability to spend your hard-earned money on it!
• Remastering by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering in the actual neighborhood of Brooklyn!

If you had the wherewithal to get the original, worry not. For the original white is still ‘legit’ and will still make you ‘cool.’ The reissued EP is available through tactile record stores and even on the interwebs. Or just peep a show, and grab one there.
