NNA and New Amsterdam release debut album from tenor sax quartet Battle Trance

NNA and New Amsterdam release debut album from tenor sax quartet Battle Trance http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1407/news-14-07-battle-trance.jpg

One morning, Travis Laplante (of Little Women) woke up with the batshit-crazy idea to form a tenor saxophone quartet with three specific musicians — Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner, and Patrick Breiner. Well, we’ve all had that dream. Laplante was just crazy enough to actually go through with it! Even though he barely knew his three soon-to-be compadres, Laplante went for it; they droned the day away, and Battle Trance was born.

Now, these mid-range woodwind warriors have graced us with a whole album of reedy goodness. Palace of Wind will be released on August 26 through New Amsterdam Records, with NNA Tapes handling the vinyl edition. Laplante has released on NNA before — his trio with Trevor Dunn and Ches Smith unleashed Ancestral Instrument earlier this year on cassette.

Here’s a little teaser for the upcoming LP:

Palace of Wind tracklist:

01. Palace of Wind I
02. Palace of Wind II
03. Palace of Wind III

Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic label releases Spatial’s new Circlon EP

Ultramajic — the eccentric dance imprint started by Ravenclaw headmaster Jimmy Edgar — has announced its 10th release, which will be helmed by London-based producer Spatial. How special! The UK artist not only started his own Infrasonics label back in 2008, releasing innovative work from the likes of xxxy and Gon, but he also crafted a “performance-based audio/video project” called “Primitives”.

Now, on the four-track Circlon EP, Spatial ventures into the stranger end of the house spectrum, with the title cut’s clipped vocal samples bouncing restlessly around an unyielding kick. “Eloptic Energy” thrives in throwback house mode, with acidic synth licks curling around some massive percussion. On “Recover,” Spatial gets more spastic with the vocal manipulation, all in tandem with the song’s milky stabs. Finally, “Sufani” harnesses gorgeously creepy textures and foreign vox to create an undeniable, hypnotic vibe. Clips from each of Circlon’s four tracks can be found below, and they are pretty special. The EP is out on July 28.

Circlon EP tracklist:

01. Circlon
02. Eloptic Energy
03. Recover
04. Sufani

10 facts about harps in honor of Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler’s forthcoming harp-centric album on Thrill Jockey

Here are 10 facts about harps that you really need to know:

Fact #1: The harp, as an instrument, dates back to around 3500 BCE, which in technical jargon means it is “pretty bloody old.”

Fact #2: Harps make great entrance sounds in pantomimes and fairy tales.

Fact #3: Modern harps aren’t really as synonymous with rock music as electric guitars, or even keytars for that matter.

Fact #4: Mary Lattimore has been setting out to alter Fact #3 by contributing her harp skills to recordings and live performances with the likes of Thurston Moore, Steve Gunn, Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, and Jarvis Cocker.

Fact #5: Lattimore teamed up with Jeff Zeigler (who has produced records with The War on Drugs and A Sunny Day in Glasgow) in December 2013 to lay down some freaky harp and synth/guitar duets for a live score to Philippe Garrel’s 1968 film Le Révélateur in Marfa, Texas.

Fact #6: Not long after, during a January 2014 snowstorm that locked everyone in Philadelphia indoors, Lattimore and Zeigler laid down some of their own harp-centric tunes.

Fact #7: Those harp-centric tunes are now compiled as an album they call Slant of Light, which will be released on September 23 by Thrill Jockey on CD and white vinyl.

Fact #8: Thrill Jockey describes Slant of Light as “an impressionistic work that draws on musical histories ancient and contemporary, existing outside current trends in music as a whole. There is nothing that sounds remotely like it.” I’m inclined to agree.

Fact #9: Lattimore and Zeigler are doing a limited run of shows at highfalutin places with names like PhilaMOCA and Body Actualized Center. The dates are below. More dates will follow.

Fact #10: By now you have realized that harps have the potential to be totally cool.

Slant of Light tracklisting:

01. Welsh Corgis in the Snow
02. The White Balloon
03. Echo Sounder
04. Tomorrow is a Million Years

Tour dates:

07.28.14 - Philadelphia, PA - PhilaMOCA
07.29.14 - Brooklyn, NY - Body Actualized Center
09.25.14 - Chicago, IL - Constellation

1080p announces (astoundingly clear!) August releases from Gobby, Bobo Eyes, Mark Wundercastle, and Temple Volant

Richard MacFarlane is doing God’s work, whether he realizes it or not, so long as we ditch the image of God as some vengeful bastard on the omnipresent lookout for sodomy. MacFarlane’s self-described “casual” approach to running the 1080p label from his Vancouver, BC residence has coincided with a deliberate frequency of releases that should keep any fan of off-kilter dance music happy and hoping for continued hi-def (though not always literally) existence. The opposite approach, contrarily, might bring a handful of releases every year, and I don’t know about you, but I just don’t have the patience for that type of propagational stripteasing. Rip those clothes off in a single motion, I say! I’ll do the same! Oh, that breeze feels nice.

Next month is a particularly revealing time for 1080p, as the label has a release planned for each week, pumping us with rhythmic fluids from lesser-knowns on a reliable basis. First, though, a name that you should undoubtedly recognize if you’re a regular reader: Gobby will be revisiting his more obviously techno proclivities with Wallet & Cellphone on August 5. Then on August 12, Bobo Eyes will soothe with lo-fi- vocals via Midnight Pearl. Mark Wundercastle will bring us some supremely heavy and well-developed tunes with Cell on August 19, and Temple Volant will subsequently take you into the life of Aquaman, if all Aquaman cared about was exploring shit in the deep sea and flipping the bird to his superhero responsibilities. Daydream Drawings comes out August 26.

Cassettes and MP3s! That’s what 1080p’s about. Those are the formats.
