Pussy Riot's Nadya Tolokonnikova missing after prison transfer following hunger strike

For today’s Depressing News and Sobering Reminders that Music People in Other Parts of the World Pay a Heavy Price for Things Many of Us Take for Granted, jailed Pussy Riot member Nadya Tolokonnikova has gone missing following a jail transfer. One of two members of the Russian punk rock band to receive jail time after a performance in a Moscow church protesting Vladimir Putin (which garnered the women a two-year prison sentence for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”), Tolokonnikova had recently grabbed headlines around the world once again for her hunger strike to bring awareness of the desperate conditions where she was imprisoned.

Her family reported the musician missing after being transferred from a Mordovian prison nearly two weeks ago, with the hunger strike considered a prime factor in the disappearance. Tolokonnikova’s husband Petya Verzilov told Lord of the Listicles and Apparent Sometimes Receiver of Actual News Buzzfeed that his wife had presumably been removed by Muscovite authorities in an attempt to “cut her off from the outside world.” It might feel like lazy internet activism, but hey, you know, sometimes signing something from Amnesty International really works.
